No that wouldn't work. Pears fall off pear trees every year.

I mean there is maybe a two week time period between the first and the last, so the tree, which has lots of little baby pears budding, produces enough to replace 10 of the pears removed by the riders.

we had a pear tree in the garden when I was a kid and they pretty much grow at the same time at the same rate, from the blossom stage on.

your complicating things with time, the answer to the riddle is right in front of you. do not add another factor into the equasion, i didnt mention time. a riddle is all about the words. what one word could mean something completely different

"12 pears hanging high", mayhaps there are pears that aren't hanging high, 10 of them, so that 11 are left over.

Alternatively these men could have an odd custom where they hang up pears after eating them, unfortunately one of them was too eager and ate all of his, so they couldn't re-hang it :P

"Each takes a pear", note that it doesn't say that they take it from the tree, this would make me think that the first man takes one, then passes it around.

The big problem there being that 'leaves' sorta gives it away, I guess you have to hope that they'll think it's a typo.

I think that solves the problem of the sentence showing that Each is a single person.

Except "each" is lowercase. Names are in uppercase, so it would have to be "Each". Therefore although that may be the intended solution it does not work as the riddle is currently written.

Of course if it was 12 pears per tree, and there were 11 trees, and each took one from a different tree then it would work. You specificy 12 in a tree, but not how many trees there are.
