In Arizona, the only state whose divorce laws I am personally aquainted with, the pre-nuptial agreement is pretty much moot: the law only divides up assests/money earned while married. So if Paul McCartney were to divorce in Arizona, Heather Mills could only claim half of what Paul earned during their time together, which would be substantial by most standards, but a lot less than what she reportedly is asking for.

In England, do the courts just divide up a couples wealth, regardless of when it was earned?

In Texas, if you can prove that you owned something before you got married then you can keep it. If not, it's split 50/50. Other factors, such as infidelity, abuse, etc can change that split.
