I just got back from my local thrift store where I bought half a dozen National Geographics with space article for a whopping $2.16.

Now that in itself is no biggie, but imagine my suprise when I get home and see the almost pristine December 1969 issue "First Explorers on the Moon, the incredible story of Apollo 11 in five parts" has a flexi-disk recording still intact called "Sounds of the Space Age: From Sputnik to Lunar Landing" narrated by Col. Frank Borman, USAF, Astronaut. Out of curiosity I looked this issue up on the internet, and it's selling there for nearly $40. Now there's 'NO WAY' I'm gonna rip this disk out, so does anyone know if they have a digital version of this recording, or know where I can get one??? Many thanks...

I've been watching this thread, Coostie, hoping you'll get an answer because I've got the record too and like you am a little reluctant to play it, although my good Akai turntable shouldn't hurt it.

All of those National Geographic articles are wonderful and the photography at the time was tops. Many of their drawings and predictions are extremely accurate. The liftoff drawing of the Apollo 11 LM, page 774 December 1969, is brilliant except for the exhaust plume, which some HBs claim must be something to do with the hoax.

I've got quite a few NG articles filed in plastic-page albums. Many of our second-hand bookshops have piles of old NGs, and the Red Cross has annual book sales where there are often hundreds of them.

Did you see the list of earlier articles on page 751 of your issue?

I like page 322 of September 1973, which shows one of the moon rock researchers, I listed here:

Sorry it took so long to reply but I've been working the last few nights. In response to your question about the list of previous articles, yes I did see them, and photocopied the page so I can take it with me the next time I go to the thrift so I can look for them. I got a real buzz from reading them and imagining the excitment of living back in the 60's and experiencing all this as new frontiers were forged. I'm only in my early 30's so missed the real 'Pioneer' days, not that I want to take anything away from what the space agency's do now of course.

Like you I thought the drawing on p774 was great also so I scanned it and now use it as a background for my desktop. Roll on the next thrift store visit...

I used to have that - I wonder if I still do, someplace, stuck in with one of my LPs from the space program.

I had the one after that (the Apollo-11 Hugh Downs single). So I'm with you, I'll have to dig to see if I still have it.
