To be honest I don't know what to think , that is why I was asking....

Consider the source. Pravda is now the equivalent of The Weekly World News.
Hm. OK, maybe not quite that bad. According to Wikipedia, there are now several Pravdas, none of which have anything to do with the original Communist Party organ. That one was shut down in 1991 along with the Party.
Still, I don't think I'd trust any of them (or any typical newspaper FTM) for accurate science reporting, especially "Meteor Doom for Earth!" headlines. Stick with stuff like Science News.
Now, a comet in the sky is perfectly possible, and they might have gotten it right by accident. Can you give us more details?

Really. "That comet at the end of october story" lacks a certain degree of information. How about, next time, some links to the stories you're asking about?
After a little searching, skipping the, eww, godlikeproductions hit, I read a mention on Huff's Blog (whatever that is): WE’S ALL GONE DIE!!!!!! (http://huffsblog.com/?p=41). It has links to machine-translations of the Pravda story.
Then Fedorovsky comet gets some hits in Google, not many.

There's a chance that the Earth may be struck by some celestial object in the near future. Actually it's being struck by celestial objects as you read this. But, that one might be big enough to destroy the immediate impact area, or even destroy a larger area, having an impact on Earth's ecosphere, possibly threatening the very existence of life on this planet, is also possible.
But notice I didn't mention any kind of numerical probabilities when I talked about there being a chance.
There is where all the difference is found.
Heck, it's more likely we'll be done in by pollution, wars, or bioterrorism well before the fatal comet arrives to rend the Earth asunder!

Probably because there isn't any real info. It's scare mongering.

Wait a minute...back in the OP you posted...
I know it is from pravda but is there anything to it.
Which strongly implies that you know that Pravda can not be trusted as a news source, yet it seems you are asking why the major (North American) media is not covering it.
I think you've answered your own question...

Many -- all? -- of these URLs are broken. The ones you gave that included 'www' have an extra right-bracket in them. The others aren't active links.

so... what's the consensus? I'm pretty much convinced this is all bunk... you'd think if it was a comet only 20 days off we'd have seen it by now. I'm calling BS.

"you'd think if it was a comet only 20 days off we'd have seen it by now."
We are much more likely to be blindsided by a comet or asteroid that we didn't see coming, than by one we know about.

I'm reminded of a scene in the movie version of The World According To Garp where the author displayed his ignorance of the rules of football. John Lithgow was playing a former (what else?) tight end who had had a sex-change operation. A man who was trying to see his wife at the women's refuge was hit and knocked down without his seeing Lithgow coming from his blind side. The man got up screaming, "He blindsided me!. He blindsided me!" as if it were some kind of illegal action worthy of a penalty. And now I'll once more completely forget about that movie.
BTW, welcome to the BAUT BB, Toast! Read the FAQs (top of the page) and have fun!

Russian scientists deny comet will collide with Earth soon
http://en.rian.ru/science/20061012/54748387.html
Scientists from Russia's central observatory near St. Petersburg have denied a prediction that a giant comet will collide with the Earth in late October, a spokesman for the Pulkovo Observatory said Thursday.
Some media reported earlier this month that Russian astronomer Nikolai Fedorovsky has predicted an October 28 collision of a huge comet with the Earth, which will allegedly unleash devastating tsunamis, earthquakes and avalanches.
Sergei Smirnov, an observatory spokesman said: "Our research does not support media reports that a comet will collide with the Earth in late October."
Smirnov said the astronomer Fedorovsky, who even failed to name the scientific institute he belongs to, is simply seeking publicity.

Unless, of course, you enjoy that sort of thing.

Thank you all. My friend thinks this comet is real and that a tsunami is going to flood Florida and we're all gonna die, or even worse it will make a big cloud form and all the plant life will die and we'll all slowly starve to death amid great suffering. So now I can tell her to stop worrying.

You said two key words in any of the Chicken Little scenerios. "We'll all"
Since I would be in the same boat as everyone else, then making additional steps won't get me too far. It might ease a few things, but not enough that worrying about it will be benificial in the long run. I won't be any worse off then most.

Presumably the Giant Comet is made of the same invisible substance as "Aussie Bloke's" fictitious meteoroids froma couple of years ago? That's why no-one (except this Russian chap) knows it exists ......
