Space" (1985) (TV mini-series)

A 13-hour mini-series detailing James A. Michner's fictional account of the American space program from the years after World War II to the Apollo landings on the moon in the early 1970's.

This adaptation of James Michener's novel was especially well done and was made in the heyday of mini-series production.

This program depicts the race for space from the closing days of World War II through a fictional end of the Apollo program. It follows the lives of five fictional main characters, which interweave from 1944 through the late 1970's. During these years we see a fictional, but accurate, portrayal of how the space program in the US developed from early failures to successful moon landings.

The cast of characters is lengthy and all of the main characters turned in very good performances. The technical and special effects were very good for the period. If you get a chance to watch a copy of this, please be prepared for a long viewing time, as even with the commercials edited out, it will last over 10 hours.

I myself and been searching for a copy of this mini-series since 1994.

I have even called Paramount movie archives department to inquire. They have it there. But for some reason it was not made available for video distribution.

Does anyone know where we can get a copy???

This is the website for a gentleman who calls himself moviesvideoman on the IMDb. His name is Cliff and is apparently a big film buff. This past April he posted having found a good copy of the series.

As someone who has had to turn every possible rock over to find much sought after films(NO BLADE OF GRASS, DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK...) or tv mini series(THE TRIPODS, WORLD WAR III, AMERIKA...). My best suggestion would be to get in touch with this fellow and see how he got a hold of it. Maybe you can even strike a deal.

After that, video dealers at sci-fi/horror conventions. Genre doesn't matter with these guys...if it's rare and even slightly sought-after, they'll have an idea.

I know the feeling you'll get when you do eventually get a hold of it. It's wonderful. Good luck. ;)

I took your advice and got in touch with the man from http://www.moviesvideoman.bravehost.com/

And I hit pay dirt. Finally after all this time I will finally get a complete copy of the mini series. I know to some it sounds pathetic. I am a space enthusiast to the max. I read the book years ago and just loved it.

Thank you with the help:-)

Read Challenge to Apollo. There are segments of that book that scream to be made into a mini-series.

:o Actually I finally managed to get Wilde's film at the last Chiller Convention(held in beautiful Secaucus, New Jersey!). A particularly difficult one to get a hold of for some time, it was a welcome addition to my ever-growing library of doomsday films. I picked up an import of THREADS as well, as(unbelievably)it is still not released in region 1. I'm closing in on AMERIKA(remember that one? ABC miniseries...Soviets take over and put Sam Neill in charge! Kris Kristofferson and Sam Waterston are our only hope!) and WORLD WAR III(NBC miniseries...President Rock Hudson vs Premier Brian Keith when the reds invade Alaska to sabotage the pipeline over a grain embargo!)
I actually had the latter on tape years ago but auctioned the sucker off and subsequently lost the backup  .

I'm grateful for the consideration on NO BLADE OF GRASS, though. Thanks Mak.

I remember that movie as well. The one scene that I remember distinctly was the fight scene in Alaska. The small US unit hid within the pipes at different angles for their fields of fire. The lost eventually but it did give them a little bit of a longer advantage.

Nothing like that final freeze-frame right after the gunshot. You have to "hand" it to the director! 3658

While stocking up on Rite-Aid's Rocky Road Ice Cream today, I picked up a 99-cent DVD from a display-rack at the register;
Flash Gordon (http://www.tv.com/flash-gordon-1954/show/10006/summary.html?full_summary=1&tag=showspace_links;full_summary&om_act=convert&om_clk=summarysh) [1954]. Not familiar with this one [90-minutes, b/w, starring Steve Holland], but the price/availability was right.
