View Full Version : Should there be a limit to how much classic tv episodes are re-touched?

I'm thinking specifically of classic Star Trek. They've already touched up the sfx added in more crew to certain scenes, more modern looking planetary effects, dressed up the Enterprise. The question is, is this already too much, or should they go further, ie. give the crew new uniforms ala "Wrath of Khan". What about modernizing the winky blinkies, etc.? Have they already boldy gone too far?

ps> I wish ther was a way to edit the headline...as I see I've made a spelling mistake.

No limit, just don't restrict access to the originals for people who prefer it that way. I don't see any reason why both versions couldn't be included on the same disk or set of disks.

Ditto.

I've always dug the campy f/x from TOS. In "Star Trek Memories", Shatner says the crew practically rummaged through dumpsters for parts to use as props, and I can believe it. Resourcefulness at its best. ;)

No worries.

I go along with Ronald: create modernized versions as much as you want, just make sure we reactionary Trekkies have access to the sacred originals.

When did they add crew members to scenes? I haven't seen any mention of that (though I missed Balance of Terror).

I think that what they're doing is enough, though. There are plenty of things that are iconic in TOS. The uniforms are one-those shouldn't be changed, IMO. Redoing FX because we have the capability is a really cool idea, I think. I'm as interested in what changed as I am in the new FX.

The established continuity, particularly in episodes like "In a Mirror Darkly" and "Trials and Tribble-ations" entrenches the 60s uniforms in the Trek canon.

That's what I forgot to say: I'd love it if the new FX team could splice the DS9 cast into "Trouble wiith Tribbles." :D It would definitely take some new CGI, but it would be really fun.

They've done nothing of the sort. Well maybe of the sort, but no where near as far as you're suggesting.
Do some research before posting like a maniac here about it.

TOS has simply been remastered in HD from the original film for re-release into syndication. Effects shots have been redone in CG as they could not be remastered as effectively as the other shots (or so the story at CBS goes).

Believe me, you wont be able to notice a difference unless you are a pretty thorough fan. Ofcourse you may enjoy the episodes as being shown in better quality and resolution than you've ever seen them before.

The Doctor Who DVDs often include as an extra the option to watch the story with new special effects. This is often limited to replacing an obvious model spaceship with a more convincing CGI version. And it's kept as an option. There is a charm to the originals effects.
