Does anyone know if the Orion Atlas EQ-G mount is capable of supporting the Orion XT10 Dobsonian tube?

I know the mount can support up to 40 pounds, but I can't find a weight of just the XT10 tube (without the base) anywhere.

Thanks.

It's a big old mount - easily take a 12" OTA.

The problems are periodic error (you won't be able to take long exposure photos), alignment and portability. The mount is good enough but even at over $1000 you are not getting an observatory quality mount.

BTW - ever thought how high a newtonians focuser will be on a high German mount (when observing the zenith)? My guess is 10-11 foot, you'll need a stepladder.

You might get around that by retracting the tripod legs, as long as the scope can still be balanced and maintain clearance.

I am interested in this topic as well. I am on the cusp of purchasing an XT-10, but wanted to know about using it on an Equitorial mount at some point in the future.

If one was going to purchase an equitorial mount for an XT-10, capable of tracking and supporting long exposures, what mount would you recommend?

Pricey, but I'd go with an equatorial platform.

To put a 10 inch Newt on an EQ mount take really beefy hardware.

Edited to add:

It might depend on whether the telescope has to be portable or if it can be installed permanently.

Depends on how much you want to spend. This would probably be considered overkill!

It was supposed to be able to. The Atlas 10 has basicly the same tube as the XT10.

You might download the XT10 instruction manual. I think it has the tube weight.
