I could understand locking it and giving a warning about spamming his site, but it wasn't a hit and run spam like most that would have been deleted, and nothing's up on the banned list either... so....

Some mod (not me!) moved it, without a redirect ... I'm sure some explanation will come shortly ... (IIRC, the posts included quite a few violations of BAUT rules, and leniency for newbies has its limits).

I'm the one who moved it. I didn't post anything to the banned posters list yet becuase I intended to discuss it with other mods before taking permenant action. If someone can make a good case for bringing back the thread, I'll weigh that with the other mod discussions on the topic.

I couldn't figure out his case in the first place to know if it was good or not. :)

Doesn't removing the thread completely simply add to the old, "I was so right they couldn't take it, so they deleted me" argument?
Sure, he was rude and broke a few rules, but he was his own worst proponent. Let others see for themselves.
(Uh, but you could fix that "22deg77min" thing. I wouldn't mind.)

If I am to bring the thread back, I will need to edit all of beforebc's posts to remove the advertisement (I could leave the link in the first one only). It generally isn't our policy to do that kind of editing, so I'd have to go against policy to do that. Are you sure it is worth doing? I'm willing to do it, but somewhat grudging about the work vs. benefit ratio, and about setting a new precident about handling this kind of thing.

Maybe we should have called in the cavalr\\\\\\ Moderators after the first two or three times. Several of us warned him/her about the rules, but were pretty much ignored. That would have made it a lot easier for you to fix, and would have nipped the problem in the bud, so to speak.
Hate to be a hardnose with someone who just joined and wasn't yet up to speed with how things operate here. For future reference, how should this have been handled?

... And if you do that, you might want to delete my posting, suggesting the correction, so as not to be confusing.

I'd say to leave things as they are. When beforebc comes out of suspension, if he wants, he can start a new thread where he details his arguments instead of just posting unhelpful links. Hopefully this time he would actually answer questions and respond to issues.

Hopefully this time he would actually answer questions and respond to issues. For some reason, that continues to elude me, this inability to grasp that the ATM section provides an extraordinarily good chance to have one's ATM idea scrutinised, by folk who both know what they're talking about, and who will make a positive contribution to the development of that ATM idea, is all too common.
It's almost as if some see the ATM section as a chance to grandstand, to engage in a one-way conversation; that the ideas being presented are believed, by the presenters, as beyond challenge ....
What are (were) they thinking?

I'm not sure he even presented an idea did he? All I saw him do was slang off historians and scientists, refuse to engage on those claims, advertise his site and then claim that anyone who responded couldn't read and didn't understand and then advertised his site again.

I think we can safely say his presentation was somewhat lacking in detail.
There did seem to be an argument that ancient Egyptians knew certain things about astronomy that may or may not be generally accepted, based on, in my opinion, rather questionable interpretations of ancient Egyptian artwork and hieroglyphic translations. As you say, it didn't go much further than that, except for more references to the website.
I would hope he could come back and provide a detailed presentation, then read and carefully respond to comments and questions. However, based on prior behavior, I seriously doubt that will happen.

Just for the record, 'beforebc' (Jim Bowles) is well known to me from numerous other forums. He tends to present his unorthodox ideas/attacks on orthodoxy, refuses to answer any serious questions (well, not mine anyway!) and eventually, when he realises no one will listen to him (partly because he won't listen to anyone else), disappear again ....
I take it he never got around to presenting his (trademarked) 'RB Effect' by which he explains how earth crust displacement really happens and how plate tectonics is all totally wrong?

No, sadly we missed that. Your description of his behavior however, matches rather well what we saw. His line this time was that ancients had advanced science, astronomy in particular. In case you didn't know, it was common knowledge 4500 years ago that the earth is spheroidal.

I think you hit the nail on the head that after the second or third post you could have hit the little red and white triangle icon at the top of his post and flag the moderator staff that there is a poster who needs help understanding the rules.
That being said, it is fortunate that this sort of thing is infrequent, so no one really knew what to do.
