Hi Everyone,

If you were going to buy a decent entry level scope to start, would get a Meade 130 mm (5-1/8") fully Auto, long tube Newtonian design with new 497 auto Star - being sold new on Internet $195

Or

Meade DS 2102AT-TC, Refractor, 102mm with 497 Auto Star, For $199

I was leaning toward Costco just because if it had a problem I could return it but didn't know how much better the other scope might be for almost the same price after shipping.

Or maybe I shouldn't get either.

Thanks for your help.

It sounds like the Costco refractor is a Meade clearance - these are usually great value, but be aware that Meade is dumping an unpopular line.

All that said, both scopes are well priced (the Autostar is worth $150 alone). The 4" refractor is probably a better bet as it is good at planets, double stars etc rather than the 5" reflector which is shy of being good at anything

Just to point out that the Meade Factory outlet is offloading TeleStar DS-2130AT 70131RE 5" reflectors with 494 Autostar for $165
