I've used Yahoo! as an inet portal for about 10 years. Unfortunately, recent changes have made it resemble People magazine content-wise, and their once-useful Yahoo TV page has been rendered almost useless by ads, gossip, and a slow-loading, ad-laden applet which has eliminated most of the functionality of the earlier applet. I want to know what's on, not be told what to watch.
Are there any other portals out there that provide useful news and services?
Your recommendations are appreciated.
PS: No MSN please.

 As a hotmail user myself, I was going warn you that if you think Yahoo is bad, msn is tons worse. It's like People magazine for 12 year old girls
PS: if you need a google invite, let me know ;)

it's at www.google.com
At the top-right, it should have a link for a personalized page (or something there-abouts). Click on it. Google offers a VERY high variety of homepage options. My favorite is the Chimp-o-matic (warning - if you voted for Bush, don't choose the Chimp-o-matic ;) )

I don't use a portal. My home page is the main Google page. Plain and unadorned.
My company has been pushing internal portals on us for several years. All they do is slow things down. When they introduced the first version, several people in my group spent hours customizing them. After which they updated the software so all the customization was lost. This has happend three or four times now. I refuse to use the portal to access a company page unless there's no other way to get there. Which is happening more and more, unfortunately.

OK, the Google customized homepage seems to be working OK.
Only glitch so far is that after a while I get more than one Gmail tab. After some time there are a bunch of them. Any tweak available to prevent this?
