I take it you mean an internet cafeYup; fully half the customers I spotted in a local mall store yesterday were fully engaged in their laptops, lattes in hand, in surreal contrast to couples who were actually facing and talking to each other. Not one customer was reading a (physical) Sunday paper. http://bautforum.com/images/icons/icon7.gif...Find out more about the Wi-Fi at Starbucks [Store locator] (http://www.starbucks.com/retail/default.asp), in the US (T-Mobile HotSpot service) or Canada (Bell Hotspot service)... I don't do Starbucks, but you just made my winter break. There's a new Starbucks about two-three blocks from my parents' place, so I can take my laptop down there while I'm home. :) My parents still have dial-up, so I plan on spending some quality time with my laptop in a coffee shop somewhere in Salem. Thanks.

All those comments presuppose the existence of a laptop, which still isn't something everyone has.
As someone who hasn't got one I can sympathize with the problems of other people bound by the laws of the connected copper.
Ok, at least partially:) Where I live I pay ~9$ per month for a shared 166Mbps line with no traffic cap, which means I do tend to have a somewhat different look of the Internet that others. (It's the other end that's slow, not me)

...I pay ~9$ per month for a shared 166Mbps line...Just out of curiosity, can you report what this speed test (http://reviews.cnet.com/7009-7254_7-0.html?CType=2277&ac=760&ISPID=&ISPNAME=&&kbps=1236.4) registers, if at all? Got into it with my ISP a few years back over their claimed speed, with them going on about "Well, that's not our test, and besides, there are computer set-up/configuration variables to consider...".

Try this link (http://reviews.cnet.com/7004-7254_7-0.html) instead...
(yours leads to a result page, not the test)
Oh - and on comcast, I get consistent 10-12Mbps results
Also, I tend to prefer this (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/) speed test, as it gives upload as well (I have a slow upload - fairly typical result is 12500kbps down, 350kbps up)

Ha, ha---your link gives me 3,350 kbps down; C/NET reports 798 kbps---arghh!

What does your ISP claim?
Mine claims 12000/364, so I get close to rated results with speakeasy (my second link)

Soylentgreen's doesn't. Libraries usually have internet-connected computers that you can just sit down at and use.
