Addiction being a topic that has been discussed here before, I thought some of you would find this interesting:

Interesting article - here is my personal idea

I have always believed that they should have the opposite of patches - that is normal tasting cigarettes without any nicotine at all.
I am a smoker trying to quit and a big part of my problem is that I enjoy and have made a big habit out of the act of smoking. I am more addicted to the psychological aspects than the physical ones.
The information I have read states that one reason that cigarettes are so addictive is the very short time between inhaling and the nicotine hit. This trains your mind that the act of inhaling the smoke is what you need/want.
If you could smoke cigarettes without any nicotine you would satisfy the psychological urge without getting the hit. This would get the nicotine out of your system and help to retrain your mind that the act of smoking does not satisfy your need/want.

Neat idea; wonder why such a thing doesn't exist? I wonder if there is anything that could be developed to smoke as a placebo during the nicotine withdrawal phase?

For a lot of people, getting over the habit is as hard as getting over the chemical.

For me, it was the chemical.
The "habit" or exercise of smoking was easily replaced with other activities.
The physical addiction was not.

I have always assumed the reason it has never happened is that such a product would have to be made by the cigarette companies themselves and they are not interested in helping people quit.

I'm guessing that even if it was developed and sold as a placebo; it would need to go thru most, if not all of the same processes for approval as a narcotic drug.

Good point - hadn't thought of that

I quit three months ago with the help of the new drug Chantix. I highly recommend it to those of you trying to quit. I've started a new exercise program. The twenty pounds I gained were not a part of the bargain when I quit. I still miss going outside and lighting up when I want to get away from a situation! It is easier to say I've got to go smoke than to admit I can't stand the people I'm having to deal with at the moment.

Welcome, Janet!

One of the advantages to never having smoked in the first place is that you never have to quit.

...If you could smoke cigarettes without any nicotine you would satisfy the psychological urge without getting the hit...They do exist:...Memory search rate was significantly faster after the nicotine cigarette than the nonnicotine cigarette... PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=2057498&dopt=Abstract)I'm guessing that even if it was developed and sold as a placebo; it would need to go thru most, if not all of the same processes for approval as a narcotic drug.Have nicotine cigarettes 'passed' FDA approval?!

about addiction: I have never heard that someone is addict of books, reading and writing, but today the definitions are totally changed, the bauters themselves are looking addict of Writing!! :)

It's ok. now I am talking about addiction of some other tools that people of this world are mostly taking help in keeping themselves in a different state of thinking,

Afoo(this is a granuel of one plant and can be smoke through the cigaret or people eat it) smoking, drinking, eating pills(for the sedation to the brain),moreover excessive drinking, drinking liquid medicines or cough expectorents to receive the kick to the brain, people are doing all such thing only just to get a relief, stress down(as they think that receives from those things) brownsugar etc. people are addict. but addiction with these thing is not a good habit for health, because these things shows the bad results in the long term use.
