View Full Version : Well, I've been out of work way too long.

Ever since I got laid off from furniture movin' I've been lazy. So not only is my gut starting to expand (Curiously enough, in direct proportion to the Hubble Constant, 464 km/sec/Mpc) but for the first time in years I can close my hands all the way into fists. Normally when I post I type just using my thumbs amd middle fingers. Cracks my daughters up when they watch me type.

Anywho, I get a monthly stipend from the Navy that covers my half of the rent so I'm not a complete no load, but still, my kid brother is covering more than his fair share. (My "kid" brother is 43) Doesn't seem to mind, bless his cynical heart.

The thing is moving is seasonal and won't pick up in earnest again for at least 5 to 6 more weeks. Normally if you're a good mover like myself you can "over winter" in a good outfit if you're working at the end of the season. They will find work for you to do even if its just painting the warehouse and rearranging the vaults and such. I didn't make the cut this year.

Okay crying mode over.

Dude, about that hand thing...see someone about that, or the other half of your income will be Social Security Disability. That's usually a pretty solid sign of some hardcore damage being done to them.

As a contractor (Plumbing mostly) i completely hear you..
Its like some months your rich..
then Nothin.. sitting waiting for the phone to ring..
And I've done Moving too:p its an EASY thing to get lazy from:p

Around here- there are labor places- that will work you day by day- if you get bored or just need some cash- its been a LONG time since i went to one though.

Many years ago i was homeless. Lived behind a Soda Machine- til a repairman found me and chased me off- then he went through my one bag- and stole anything of value that i had...

nice..

It was that way for about 9 months...
But with the Blessings of many strangers and a lot of hard work.. i slowly worked my way back up.
Without Drugs or Alcohol to slow me down.. It was a steady climb...
soon i was renting a duplex...
Then i had my own shop in town.. bought a truck...
Now im in a Four bedroom two bath house- full yard- Jacuzzi..Nice neighborhood.. Just bought my Newest truck.. and two people in the house

Sometimes it isnt about the circumstances- but how you face them.
Gotta have the right attitude..
I never once stood on a corner- or begged- i was ashamed- i shaved, stayed clean- got haircuts..
Now -while waiting on a light to change.. Sitting in my shiny new truck- i see bums on the corner- flying a sign. I always offer them work- they always make excuses.
The Truest value is how much you value yourself...

Dood - Its actually fairly status quo among steady movers. You're hands get really hard and then lose a bit of flexibilty. Another sign of steady moving is you get really big calf muscles. All the good movers have 'em. (As opposed to the lazy ones). The up side is you can shake a full grown man unconsious. Amazing what you can get away with if you don't actually hit someone with your fist. (I'm not bad tempered, its just some guys make me do that to them. Five in the last three years alone.)

Neverfly - I thought you were younger than that. Anyway, around here the labor places that would employ movers are chuck full of junkies and ex-cons. Now for the most part I don't mind working with ex-cons, about 25% to 35% of all movers have "made a mistake", it was that these guys are unrepentant ex-cons. I guess career criminal is a better term. When I walked out of one such place it was because several of my potential "co-workers" were actively planned a heist right there in the hall. I wanted nothing to do with that place.

Why does everyone on here think im a kid? everyone who knows me always thinks im much older than i am..
oh well..

(Side note) ok for the record- im 28 years old:neutral:

Yeah i hear ya about those Cons..
Really best to avoid them- You may find yourself being investigated as guilty through association..
In my line of work- many new laws have been passed.. So there are no felons in the trade anymore. Simply because we go directly to peoples homes.

well sorry for my ramblings but the when I am out of work there is plenty to just around my place to keep me busy, but when we want to work and there is no work it just sucks.

Neverfly - Maybe...the avatar?

Actually its bad where movers are concerned too. If one guy on a crew is accused of stealing the feds will often go to everybody on the crews' house and go through your stuff looking for stolen loot. Has to do with movers being in the public trust and the dept o' transportation. I've seen it done. Catching a newbie on my crew stealin' puts me in a really dangerous frame of mind.

One time I caught a new crew member going through the customer's medicine chest picking out the better prescriptions, (Actually it was two of the younger guys who saw him and came and told me) I slipped in behind him, grabbed the back of his belt with both hands and propelled him upwards so hard that he left a grease stain on the ceiling and landed uncousious in the bathtub. (A victorian mansion, fairly low ceilings)

The customer came in when she heard the noise and I said, "Oh my God! He fainted!" We woke him up and sent his backside down the road then and there. Turned out the skell was a major junkie. Got fired from three different moving companies till he settled in one that didn't care. Which I wasn't surprised to find out was the first company I started moving with. THOSE guys had been going down hill for a while. But I was new to the trade and stuck with them for longer than I should have.

The last straw was when they tried to get me to do an eviction. For you folks who are unfamiliar with the moving trade thats the lowest rung on the ladder. They wanted me to put a woman with two small kids on the street 8 days before Christmas. Yeah right.

Quitting them slubs was the best thing I'd done too. Ended up working for Bekins. A trueism in moving. You want to work for the outfit that charges the highest rates. You get to work with a much better class of customers. Folks who require you to sign a piece of paper that makes you promise not to tell others the cool stuff they own. I've seen and handled absolutely mind bogling art and valubles. I saw a 400,000 square foot single family private residence. I thought it was a hidden luxery hotel when we first drove up to it.

Okay I'm starting to ramble, goodnight.

Lol Gillian, if you don't read his stuff because of his spelling and grammar, my posts must drive you to drinking! :) I have the same mindset as Neverfly though; I post here for fun and as a distraction, and half the time I'm doing a thousand other things while participating in this forum. Therefore I don't worry much about grammar (and I suck at spelling, even though I consider myself as somewhat of a writer). For a while i was using that spell-checking plug-in for IE, but since the company made us upgrade to the latest version it doesn't work and I haven't bothered to try to re-install it.

Yup.

And, of course, Maksutov, I can write dialect just fine. That's different; just ask Mark Twain. Now, properly punctuated dialect--that's an exciting challenge for any obsessive grammarian! (As, frankly, is reasonably phonetic spelling for it.)

(As, frankly, is reasonably phonetic spelling for it.)Gillian, did I ever get you to read my one and only piece of Firefly fan fiction? I'd be interested in your reactions in general and to my use of dialect in particular. You might even enjoy the story. Here's a link:

No one's saying you's got to write good, Mistuh. What's I'm sayin' is you's got to write right, and no amount of learning's gunna change how I talks like, see? So if'n I writes like I talks, then that's the best I's or anyone else can hope for. Iss the way it's got's to be!
