Lllllllllllllllllllllladeeez and germs, preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesenting the conclave of the year! The gathering to end all gatherings! The get-together fabled in song, story, and ancient Incan calendars! It's the Sixth First Annual Semi-Unofficial MidWestern Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board Denizens' HandShakin' EyeBallin' and BullSqueezin's StarGaze, Story Tellin', and Bar-B-Q!!!

Held in conjunction with (but not necessarily with the knowledge of) the Miami Valley Astronomical Society's Apollo Rendezvous to be held in Dayton Ohio on June 15 - 15, 2007, and hosted by the Miami Valley Astronomical Society and the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, this year's Apollo Rendezvouz is also Greatcon 2007, the Astronomical League Great Lakes Region annual convention!

Featured speakers include:
Dr. Bill Owen, a principal engineer and supervisor of the Optical Navigation Group at JPL, speaking on the navigation engineering involved with the 2005 Deep Impact encounter with 9P/Tempel 1.
Dr. Margaret Hanson, Associate Professor of Physics at the University of Cincinnati, speaking on infrared techniques for observing within our own Milky Way galaxy.
Dr. Dale Partin, secretary of the Warren Astronomical Society, speaking on the probability of finding extraterrestrial intelligence.

Swap meet! Bring yer goodies, stake out a prime location, and attempt to separate the event goers from their hard earned cash, all under the stern yet bemused eyes of a couple of denizens of this here board!

Raffle! Hey, I won the big kahuna prize last year, so there's hope for you yet!!

Telescope and Astroimaging competitions!

Vendor area -- those fine folk we know and love, and now you can pick it up and take it with you! No more waiting for the vagaries of the USPS!!

Light refreshments available from the "Friends of the Museum"!

Box lunches available by preorder only when you order your event tickets! The lunches are from Jimmy John's, a local submarine shop (INSERT BLATANT PLUG -- I've noshed there more than once...the tuna subs are to plotz for...).

Admission:
Before May 28 -- individual, $30, family $40
After May 28 -- individual, $40, family $50

And that includes the one, the only, the SFASUMWBABBDHSEBSSGSTBBQ!!! The Saturday evening StarGaze and BBQ at the Association's dark sky observatory at John Bryan State Park, northeast of Yellow Springs, OH , now officially listed as Minor Planet Center Observatory H66 and the U.S. Air Force's Optical Satellite Tracking Station!
Download the directions and map to the dark sky site as a .pdf file here! (http://mvas.org/ar2007/JB_Map.pdf)

(A small note...keep this quiet and amongst us.. please be aware that the Rendezvous and its associated events are our only fundraiser of the year for the MVAS. If you only wish to come and socialize at the SFASUMWBABBDHSEBSSGSTBBQ, a small donation in the box out at the BBQ site would be greatly appreciated. As last year, an amount of $10 is suggested. And for those who care to camp out inside the fence at the observatory for the evening, $5 toward the care and feeding of the telescope would be appreciated. Please notify me IN ADVANCE if you intend to camp out so I can make arrangements for a club member to stay the night on site.)

I haven't been able to make the previous ones, but I may be able to do it this year. Won't know for sure until the date gets closer.

I thought 15 - 15 was deliberate. Right in keeping with the rest of the pitch.

Kinda like Spatula City.

Sounds like a good time but too far away for me.

And just as a by the by...if you're attending, bring any surplus $1 bills you have lying around, for the GrabBAbag! Each and every bag guaranteed to contain an item worth at least $1 US! Actual utilitarianism/usefulness of said item[s] not vouched for! Could be astronomical! Could be some stuff I had lying around the house and decided to pitch! But in all cases, you get to keep the purple velvet Crown Royal drawstring bag the item comes in!

All proceeds go to the care and feeding of the telescopes out at John Bryan State Park Observatory!

Come one come all, shuck out a buck!

Just a thought ...

Maybe our Australian and/or New Zealander readers could put on their own Bad Astronomy-inspired barbecue. Barbecue and astronomy under the Southern Sky! MMMMMM .... :)

Well, the Sixth First Annual Semi-Unofficial MidWestern Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board Denizens' HandShakin' Eyeballin' and BullSqueezin's StarGaze, Story Tellin', and Bar-B-Q is history. A good time was had by all. Fellow FWISer Russ won the monster binculars so graciously provided as a raffle prize by Oberwerk (http://www.bigbinoculars.com/80bt45.htm), and we all went out to the John Bryan State Park Observatory for an evening of good food, good conversation (the several different conversations with Tammy Plotner were absolutely fascinating...astronomy, politics, beer...she's a woman for all seasons), and good viewing (my Monsters were up and running, along with at least fifteen different scopes, from a 3" door prize Bushnell reflector to the MVAS 9" refractor [it takes two to lift in and out of the saddle] to numerous 12" Meade or Celestron go-to's to the MVAS 16" Dob).

Just so you all get oodles'n'oodles of advance warning...

Time to start planning NOW...

Apollo Rendezvous 2008 is set!!
AR 2008 will be on June 13-14, 2008. Please mark your calendars!!!

We will be celebrating the Miami Valley Astronomical Society's 90th anniversary next year! That means the SFASUMWBABBDHSEBSSGSTBBQ
(aka the Seventh First Annual Semi-Unofficial MidWestern Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board Denizens' HandShakin' Eyeballin' and BullSqueezin's StarGaze, Story Tellin', and Bar-B-Q) will be a real barn burner!

Plan now! B there or B^2!
