Hi people, I have a quick question.

I was observing Jupiter several nights ago through a 10" f4.5 reflector.

The resolution was very good, the moons were sharp.
Checked out M13 and again very good resolution.

However, it did not do well on planatary detail. I found the 10" shorter focal lenght did an excellent job on light (perhaps too much).

I think the brightness had 'washed - out' the contrast on planetary detail.

What would be a good filter(s) to reduce the light and enhance detail on the brighter planets ?

Thanks

Ron W

Ron,

These sites may be of help:

http://sciastro.net/portia/advice/filters.htm

http://www.go-astronomy.com/telescopes/planetary-filters.htm

I don't normally use a filter when observing Jupiter (Mars is another matter entirely) but when I do it's usually a Wratten #80A.

Many thanks for those sites Dave.

The sciastro.net seems to have a lot of information that will help.
