View Full Version : God save our gracious queen

HM Queen is a total badass. She's just the best head of state anyone could ever hope for. Corgis obey her every command. President Bush is the most powerful man in the world and yet even he trembles in humility in the Presence. She is so badass she doesn't even demand the flag be at half mast in the event of her death. I hope that never happens, but unfortunately it eventually will happen. I hope we have at least at least 10 good years, hopefully 15 years, left of her reign. She is a fantastic!
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen.
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.

The BBC was forced to issue an apology to the queen Thursday after claiming she had stormed out of a photo shoot (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=467754&in_page_id=1770&ct=5)...
The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/international/news/e3i47021a7b93e54966a8f1214030b9d071)Now that's power! :)

Though with the BBC thing, I think you have to take into consideration the fact that both the queen and the BBC are organs of the British state, in a sense. She's the head of state, and they are the official media. If Voice of America did something criticizing GWB in the US, you can be sure that heads would roll.

Funny, when I read Glom's OP, the voice in my head doing the verbalization was that of Victor McLaglen, as he and John Wayne, having finished their epic battle and taken relief in Cohan's pub, becoming friends out of mutual respect (and totally wasted), ventured into White O'Mornin, and Victor announced to Maureen O'Hara "God bless all in this house!"

That was on the late show last week!
In my whole life I've only ever been in one fight like that. My face swelled so badly that for days when I moved my head too fast my face bobbed and swayed like a "bosom". It was declared a draw for chutzpah reasons. (In twelve rounds the guy I was fighting hit me in the face 120+ times but he couldn't knock me down or out.) I was fighting a golden gloves who weighed 60 pounds less than I did. This was a smoker's match at sea and all the regularly scheduled bouts had finished but everybody was still up for more. Nobody his weight wanted to fight him so I volunteered and the ship's doc okayed it. The thing was he kept trying for the knock out blow and not realizing I was dreading the body shots. Early on he nailed me in the liver and that almost ended there. Another one would have finished me. Even he was impressed at the beating I took.

he's just thinning the herd. You've heard of the buffalo theory of drinking?
From Cheers I believe
A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive drinking of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

I remember my first hangover, but only because I was hurling until midday the next day, which is kinda hard to forget.
Using my extremely foggy memory of the night, i think i had 6 different types of alcohol, and around 25 standard drinks.

The cost to us is minute though. Apparently last year the cost per person was equivalent to the cost to watch 1 minute of England vs Portugal at the world cup. A whopping 62p per person per year.
She does tend to bring in the tourists (I wonder what the income due to having a Royal Family and the associated touristy bits is compared to the cost?) and acts as a pretty decent figure head for the nation who unlike some of her family tends to be fairly scandal free which is more than can be said of some other public figures.

Some people definitely come to see the pagnetry associated with having a Queen. I know several who have travelled considerable distances at least in part to see things like trooping of the colour etc. I dont think tourism would dry up totally without her or anything but i do think it would be affected.

Don't get your knickers in a twist, Lianachan. The rules regarding regnal number is to take whichever is higher of the two (technically three) kingdoms. It just so happens that since the Union, no monarch of Great Britain has had a name that has been used more in Scotland than in England. But if it were to happen at some point along the line, the next James to be King will be James VIII, because their have been seven previous King James's of Scotland, even though there has only been two of England.
Captain, we would still have to pay for the upkeep of a ceremonial president. We can't have a head of state or ours, hereditary or elected, to be without a sufficient degree of bling. You don't want the rest of the world to think we're a two bit operation here, do you? In fact, I don't think we're blingy enough. I'm big on the idea of a Blair Force One. No. Partisan politics are against the board rules. Clinical discussions of politics as it pertains to science (or anti-science) have always been tolerated, but somewhat discouraged. That US politics are so frequently at the center of such rule violations is a reflection of a) the especially heated nature of the political climate in the states right now and b) a plurality (possibly a majority) of BAUT users are from the states.
We're almost certainly right on the line of what may well get this thread locked.
