View Full Version : Kim Bauer annoys me so much! (24 s1)

In general, I hate these rebel teens that decide to go off in a strop, decide to hang around with shifty guys who could more obviously be bad news if the label "Bad guy" was tattooed on their foreheads, and then find that these shifty guys kidnap them, drug them, rape them, do all manner of bad things to them. Don't stick your hand in the fire unless you want to get burned!

Kim Bauer is this in spades.

One bit that really annoyed me was in the 3:00-4:00 episode of season 1 when the shifty guys have recaptured Kim but left Janet in the middle of the road to die. When back in the van, Kim keeps moaning to the obviously psychopathic guy about how they need to go back to help her. The psycho decides they need to go back to finish her off as she is a security threat. They then duct tape her up. Amazingly, Kim acts all surprised by this.

As she was moaning, I was thinking "Shut up, girl! This is going to go down badly! You're making things worse!" And I was right.

Let's think about this for a moment. Janet may need help, but where did Kim get the idea that these guys were the ones to provide it? It's bizarre. Janet is clearly much better off hoping a good samaritan will deliver the help (as happens) than returning to captivity. Yet Kim is saying, "I want her to be back in your cludges where you can continue to abuse her."

It's car crash TV watching her say and do things that you know are just making things worse.

Slap, slap, slap the dumb blonde.

I can't imagine watching TV that annoyed me and then ranting about it on the net. It's simple - turn it off! Jeez.

Are you still hungover?

I'm always amused when someone says stuff along the lines of "Can you believe [TV character] did that?". My g/f is notorious for saying stuff like that. Then for *some* reason she gets mad when I make fun of her and say, "It's a television character. It's not a real person. They did it because the script said to."

Being a smart [donkey] apparently isn't appreciated by all people.

What's even worse is a heroic character who takes huge risks and saves the day. Or confronts the bad guy and with a few well-chosen words, shames him into humility. Then your significant other (female) says "Why can't you be like that?" And you say "Because no script writer is guaranteeing me a successful outcome!" Significant other doesn't buy that.

Why can't you be like that?

If you give the bad the guy a toy gun and rubber machete, and me 2 million dollars, I'm twice the hero that guy is. :D

You're casting doubt on my belief that it is impossible to pretend to
be witty.

I'm in the middle of season 2, and just finished the hour in which she's dumb enough to go down and lock herself in a bunker with the creepy "lives alone in the woods" guy because he couldn't (wouldn't?) tune his radio properly.

The only thing that really aggravates me about her is that she's the daughter of a CTU agent/ex special ops guy, but she has no self-defense skills at all. Whenever she gets grabbed by someone, I keep yelling out, "knee that guy in the groin! Poke him in the eyes!" I was happy when she smashed her employer with that big metal bar, but otherwise.... One would think that after the first season, she'd have started taking martial arts classes or something.

But she's hot, so I forgive her for it. If I were a bad guy, I would kidnap her. Kim is my second favourite character, after Nina, who was awesome even at the start, but then turned out to be so delightfully evil. I hope she shows up past season two.

Or, as my wife put's it "Wanna see where I buried all the other hikers I found in the woods"

Yea, that was pretty much what I was refering to when I said it gets worse.

On the other hand, I would like to see 24 hours of Kim running on a tread mill

I watched the whole of the first "day" on DVD and enjoyed it until near the end when they pulled that totally unfair twist about Nina.

I watched the first three or four hours of the second "day" on DVD too, but once Kim started to get into the same sort of trouble as last time, I began to lose interest... And then I saw a picture from the third "day" which featured - wait for it - a picture of Kim tied up and tape over her mouth.

Are we really expected to have racing pulses and bitten nails for the same thing over and over again???

I can't understand people continuing to come out with variations on this cliche. Come on Tim, I've read other posts of yours and they are generally thoughtful and interesting.

When people watch an ongoing TV serial (or read a book, or anything like that) they are investing time and involvement in it. Naturally they are going to have an emotional response to it, whether favourable or unfavourable.

A lot of people find that discussing what they are reading or watching is an integral part of the experience. And where better to discuss it than on the Internet?

The "switch it off" option is appropriate for programmes that simply haven't engaged you in the first place. But if something has engaged you, you want to know what happens next, because that's the essence of good storytelling. When you find out, you might be delighted or disappointed - either way, it's reasonable to want to express this to others who wish to discuss the programme.

I had to look it up. I did see most of the first season of 24, but wasn't interested in season two, and didn't remember that much about the show.

Nice picture on Wikipedia, though.

I looked the name up in the same Wikipedia article yesterday!
Didn't follow the link to the "24" page, though. What network
or cable channel or whatever is it on? I don't recall ever seeing
a promo for the show on those occasions when someone has
foolishly allowed me to get within sight of a working TV and
within reach of a working remote control.

Yes, you are right Paul. I guess I haven't been "hooked" on a TV series in a long, long time.

She even has her own class of cliche: TheKimberly (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheKimberly)

P.S., check out the linked comic strip. It captures her character perfectly.

Isn't there some kind of Internet rule against a webpage having a link to itself? If not, there should be.

OT, I love 24. :)
