Report: Drunk astronauts allowed on shuttle (http://www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/space/07/26/astronaut.drinking.ap/index.html)
That was the headline on CNN today (searched forum, didn't see any threads yet).
Aviation Week & Space Technology, a weekly trade journal, reported the finding from the panel on its Web site. The weekly said that the committee found that on at least two occasions, astronauts were allowed to fly after flight surgeons and other astronauts warned they were so intoxicated that they posed a flight-safety risk.
The article then goes on to explaine that the committee was formed after the whole love-triangle incident, and spends as much time talking about that (but not adding anything new) as it did explaining the drinking accuistations. So, not much info from the article on it. But personally, if I was about to climb ontop of however many tons of rocket fuel and blast myself off the face of the earth (litterally) I'd probably get drunk first too. ;)

I wonder if they are refering to these two (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Space_Homer)?

I know. I found it after I posted the second post, with the pics. I don't understand why a search for "Drunk Astronauts" didn't turn up a thread titled "Drunk Astronauts Allowed on Shuttle ???". But oh well. I got to reference a Simpsons eppie, so still happy even with the toseek.

Okay okay, MORE more bad press.
Breaking News banner on CNN: NASA says it has found wires which may have been deliberately cut on computers bound for the international space station.
No accompanying story yet, though.

I was going to say 'unbelievable', but the ramshackle, disorganized state of most Federal agencies these days makes me believe otherwise.
I believe the part that failed on the LHC during the test run was also made in the US.
Pitiful!

From the BBC news site:
The computer is designed to collect and relay data from sensors which detect vibrations and forces on the space station's external trusses.
That does not appear to be a 'non-essential' function to me!!
IMHO, NASA needs to abort the launch and go over that computer AND the shuttle with a fine-tooth comb. We don't need another Columbia disaster!

We have to be off alcohol for 24 hours before a flight offshore. Obviously the North Sea has a stricter safety culture than NASA.

Why is it whenever an elite group of people reach a certain status, they have the following motto:
Rule #1. We can do no wrong.
Rule #2. When caught doing wrong, see rule # 1.

tbmWell, from the non-"elite" group:
Group X is getting too 1337 (elite), let's look for any little thing to discredit them.
Not that blasting off blasted is a good thing. (I've been dying to use that one.) But it seems any group or person in a position of power/authority/attention suddenly gets every single tiny character flaw, real or imagined, pointed out. From tabloids to political mud slinging, I guess humans just love watching "how the mighty fall."

Also there's something in this thread about NASA but I don't recall having seen that. Finally I don't recall having written this post.
Do you have another question?

I agree. The big story is always about how people fail once spectacularly instead of how they repeatedly succeed mundanely.
But, Jeez o peets, what a bad time for this story to get out.

If the other story hadn't occurred, the subcommittee hadn't been formed, this story probably wouldn't have gotten out.
I've little doubt that astronauts have had a toast or three before climbing into their suits before slipping the surly bonds since the days of Sputnik (ok, so the astronauts were flying jets back then...).
