I've just found out that EVE-online works with very crappy bandwidth, so I've started out on it. are there other EVE players here on baut?

I tried the free triall, but tired of it after the first night. (Sorry Doodler et. al). Just not my cup 'o tea, but I do appreciate some of the innovations it brought to the genre.

OK, here I am trying to resist checking it out, and now there's a thread dedicated to it. I'm starting to think cosmic forces are at work on me.

Curses, I'm trying out the trial account and am getting hooked.
So, one of the things they tout is that there's only one server, which at the moment has 29,500 some-odd players on it, versus multiple servers that other MMOs uses. At any one time, how many people does a typical MMO, let's say WoW, have on a server?

The most I ever saw online in my realm (WoW) was around 1.2k, IIRC. And I was on a medium-population server.
I haven't played WoW in about 2 or 3 months, so I downloaded all the updates and logged in last night. I stood in the inn where I had logged out so long ago and stared at the screen for about a minute then sighed and said, "bleh, I don't feel like doing this" and exited.
I want a game that is fast paced, where you can log in, enjoy the action almost right away, but if you only have 10 minutes to play you can still play, but that has persistance and character building. Like an MMO counter-strike.

EVE has several servers. arranged in a cluster. you move from server to server as you travel between regions of solar systems.
the cluster has handled as much as 56 000 players at once. :shifty: so it is quite remarkable in this regard.
Today they are installing a brand new cluster to replace the old hardware. :) so in the future even more players can be online at the same time.
If only my internet connection didn't get meltdowns every now and then it would be perfect. :wall:

note to the mods: feel free to merge.. my brain must have been malfunctioning since i didn't find the old thread on the subject.

Quickie bump to get this into Doodler's radar now that he's back from his involuntary hiatus.
And I did it, ran out my trial and subscribed. Although I used one of the perferred ETC vendors and bought a 90-electronic day card for $38. ($13/mo versus $20/mo subscription.) Now I'm goofing around in a 0.5 system in the Lonetrek region in a Bantam (SS Chip-Dock-Repeat) trying to train up skills to get an Osprey. (Which I'll name SS Chip-Chip-Dock-Repeat, since I'll be able to stay out in the asteroid belts longer.)

I actually only have one toon I really don't play much now. Back in SWG. EVE's an awesome game, but I've seen some improvements in Star Wars that pulled me back in.

One what? I like the offline training, since I can't play much, it still lets me advance at a nice rate.

I've spent way too much time in EVE lately.
the offline training is one of the realy good features of the game. it means that the difference between those playing 24/7 and those playing a little less is not as great as in other games.(and taking a break for a couple of days is needed every now and then).
I curently run around in Verge vendor atm so feel fre to drop a call if you are thereabouts.

I'm trying to get Evemon working, the API/username pair isn't being recognized. But that looks like it'll be a nice tool to get alerts when skills finish up without having to log in.
I'm being courted to join a corp. It's a mining-centric corp, but mostly the members are independant and don't have a strict "you mine and you haul and you refine" setup. Half of them aren't even in the same region. Membership seems to be nice, 5% of mission rewards about 35k excluding bonuses, nothing on mining. So if you do nothing but mine or do low reward missions, membership is free.
Since I'm not going to be on much, I don't want to join one with a lot of requirements.

Eh, I gave up on EVE a few months ago. CCP seems way too focused on adding "cool new features" than making sure the ones they've already added actually work properly. Plus, the overriding EVE culture never really meshed with my play style. Suicide ganking my brand new, 500,000,000 iskie Hulk in what's supposed to be safe space before I ever got a set of lasers on it was just such a demoralizing hit, I stopped caring.
I'm sitting on my hands, waiting for the release of Pirates of the Burning Sea. I think an 18th century sea combat MMO is more up my alley. If I get the space itch, I still have my Freelancer game disc, and a small community of friends who still play it.

Yeah, the domi-bomb didn't impress me much, either. If I get the urge to play a starship again, I'll give STO a whirl.

I'll have to check and see if SWG still has a free trial. I tried the trial a long time ago, closer to when it first came out. It was the first MMO I tried, so part of my dislike was probably from not being use to that style of game. I was disapointed that everyone was running the same quests at the same time, but that's just how MMO's go.
But there were a TON of clipping, control, lag, and camera issues that drove me nuts. But I made the mistake of dusting off my WoW toon (figuratively of course) and now I'm re-addicted. It's soo easy to sit down and spend 2 hours in game and not realize it. My server is almost barren compared to it's population when I first started playing however, and it's making it nearly impossible to find groups to run the instances.

There's a 21 day free trial on now for Star Wars. Questing was alright, and its improved dramatically, though I was more into space PvP than anything. The server I'm on is one of the lighter ones, with people moving to Bria, Starsider, or Bloodfin (or Bugfin, as I call it. The battlecry used to be "Sploit till you see the bluescreen of their monitors!") depending on the game style they life. Those of us left on Kettemoor are working on rebuilding, trying for a more laid back existance.

Just a random side note: I didn't realize until I saw it quoted, but* I used the word "but" to start three sentences in a row (counting the after-the-comma one in the first of the three). I know better than that... must be lack of coffee.
*I had to use it there, couldn't help it
