With a busy day of meetings and media events to spend in D.C., we prioritized our hit list and put Ben's at the top, managing to stroll in early in the afternoon. There on the right was the griddle, lined up with ravishing hot dogs and half-smoke sausages, sizzling hot and ready to be bunned, dressed, and topped with chili. We ordered a chili dog and a chili smoke, as well as pieces of just-made sweet potato cake and chocolate cake. The man who took our order told us to find a seat, then shortly brought the food, the dogs each presented in a red plastic basket along with a pile of potato chips, the cake served in a see-through take-out box.
The half-smoke is sensational! A taut-skinned smoky link unique to the D.C. area, it is bigger than most hot dogs, well-browned on the griddle.
YUM! This one is near where I used to live. :D I've had their chili before (I used to live at 13th and Clifton, so this restaurant was just down the hill from my apt), and it was delicious! I'm not a big meat-eater or hot dog fan, so I only patronized the place occasionally. Might be worth renewed interest, however.

Those are delicious hotdogs!
I hope they will build a branch of this side of the planet.:p

Why won't the following post in Off-topic Babbling's, Best Dogs thread?
It posts fine, here:
Anyone remember Luby's "dogs cooked in beer?" Was that Luby's?
I thought they were terrible.
Best dogs I've had have been over here in Germany, only they don't call them hot dogs. The call them brautwurst.
Pop one of those puppies on a bun with some mustard and you get full, fast - they're twice the diameter of a regular dog (four times the cross-area), and about 50% longer, so you're really getting 6 dogs for the price of one.

It posted fine, just duplicating the text you placed in that other article. I edited now, adding an introduction and marked it as quotation, for clarity as to source.

Most things cooked in beer taste better!

That's how I do brautwurst. They are boiled in beer, water, onions, and some seasoning, to cook them. They are then browned on the grill. If you try to cook them on the grill you risk drying them out. I get my brauts from a local butcher shop, Barb & Patty's; they make the best ethnic sausages (one lady is Italian, the other is Polish). Remember, support your local butcher!
Good thread Paracelsus, I love hotdogs and sausages.

Thanks, Swift! :) People cook crabs in beer around these parts, and the beer is said to make them taste mighty good--even the 'stinky' part goes down smooth.

That reminds of a trip I took to Florida back in the 1980s. It was a vacation for me and my son. I decided to drive and enjoy the local stuff along the way.
When we got back to Connecticut, I rewarded the couple next door who had looked after my house with (among other things) two t-shirts which read "Maryland Is For Crabs" complete with the appropriate blue crab illustration.
Meanwhile the best dogs are to be had at Blackie's in Cheshire, CT (http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=667).

Here's a Bobby Flay (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_26989,00.html?rsrc=search) brat recipe from foodnetwork.com, pretty similar to one's I've done.
