Are currently being played on one of the Toronto radio stations...Q107, pretty cool countdown, they're in the top 30 now i think

you can listen live at http://www.q107.com/home/default.aspx

BTW I am in no way affiliated with any radio (I'm a teacher), I just think it's cool

Is there a list somewhere? I tried clicking on the link, but my computer balked.

It's probably the list Rolling Stone (magazine) published, I think earlier this year. It was a few months ago that a friend gave me the MP3s on a DVD.

No, it's not that one, I think it was voted on by listners of the station.

That radio station wouldn't play Public Enemy, as an example

It's done now, but the list will probably be on their website tomorrow

You don't think they're narrowing the field too much, by picking only 500?

;)

You'd be suprised at how many of the songs you would recognise!

Surprised, or depressed because I'm old enough to remember them when they first came out...

There's a station in the Detroit area -- WDRQ, "Doug FM" -- that claims to play "everything." Aside from David Hasselhoff, Paris Hilton, and John Tesh, which they acknowledge they won't play, it seems to be pretty much 70s and 80s rock. I've heard some other things, like country, Frank Sinatra doing "My Way", and "King of the Road," but it's mostly the rock.

"Another Brick in the Wall, part 2" gets too much play while the rest of Pink Floyd gets hardly any. I've heard "99 Red Balloons" several times, and I heard it maybe twice when it was popular.

What number is "Don't Fear the Cowbell, uh Reaper"?

"I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!"

Christopher Walken just cracks me up when he's acting stupid -- he still comes off as "about to come unhinged" but in a funny way.

Now THAT was hilarious! It's been a while since I've seen it..thanks!

Here's another Walken SNL classic, "Colonel Angus".

Warning, a bid ribald material there, but it had me in stitches when it first aired.

These Top [x] lists vary depending on the tastes of those doing the compiling, and I think it tends to weigh more modern material, just from the force of familiarity of recent memory. Anyway, here's one that claims to be a compilation of various rankings:

http://classicrock.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=classicrock&cdn=entertainment&tm=7&gps=61_14_886_533&f=10&su=p284.8.150.ip_&tt=13&bt=0&bts=0&zu=http%3A//rock-songs.com/

They put "Don't fear the Cowbell" at #87. Note they have "Stairway to Heaven" as #1, with "Sastisfaction" as #2. The last Top [x] "countdown" I saw had "Sastisfaction" as #1.

Me, I like "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Sympathy for the Devil" the best of the Stones, but I wouldn't put either at #1. And I see Tom Petty's "Free Falling" ranks pretty high too. I'd agree with that.

And I see ABBA only made it in the 200s with "Dancing Queen" which figures -- nobody wants to admit they liked 'em. 10 years ago, I would've died before I admitted I liked them, but now I don't care. My favorite, "Take a Chance on Me":

That should've been in that Top 500, and I don't care who knows I think so anymore.

if the song "Ode to Harry" by M.O.D. isn't on it, then it isn't a complete list.
or, if it doesn't include any Metallica songs besides "Enter Sandman" and "Nothing Else Matters".

MOD is quite unknown on this side of the planet to most people these days, also those into rock and metal.

As for Metallica, quite an embarrasing situation some years ago. On the rock radio, One used to be a top 5 song every year. Now the pop radio started a top 1000, any category. First year, One comes in at place 35 or something like that. I think it was the first time they ever played that song on that channel. They only played the first 3 minutes of course. Second year, place 21. Also only played the first 3 minutes, DJ finishes with "I'd never heard the song before but I think I like it". A radio DJ who does not know a song in the top 30 of all times? Anyway now it's somewhere in the top 20 IIRC and under threat they've played it in its entirity. The rock channel tries to play it front to end, but they often have a time restraint (the top is aired at Christmas eve...) and are forced to cut off the second half of One and Child in Time. For Child in time it's no problem IMO because it really is a virtual copy of the first half, but for One it's an essential part of the song.

The Q107 list is here (http://www.q107.com/home/FiveHundredGreatestSongsofAllTime/tabid/581/Default.aspx).Hmm. 10 Rush songs made the list. (not that I disagree), but perhaps a bit of Toronto bias there.

Perhaps...

I skimmed the list until I was convinced I spent way too much of my time listening to radio.

Ridiculous! Never before in the history of the universe has Toronto ever had any sort of Bias. I berate your bias-noticing ability!

I'm not that big a Rush fan, anyway, but there should have been more Guess Who (note that's not Toronto bias, that would be Barenaked ladies)

You must have missed it : #45 on the list

I take back what I said about the Guess Who, there's plenty on the list. There's also TONS of Tragically Hip, which definately IS Toronto Bias (although they're from Kingston, Ontario)

Bleh, if there's a Metallica song I see too darned much on top XXX lists, its "One".

Guys, awesome song, but its PLAYED THE HECK OUT!!!

Fade to Black, Orion, and Master of Puppets...so much underappreciated material.

Overhere, they play Master of Puppets a lot, in fact more than One, even though One ranks higher in the tops.

If there's anything I envy Europe for, the heavy metal culture is a lot more alive and well than it is over here in the States. There are a few breakthroughs, but by and large, the old school metalheads haven't been replaced by new talent.

Even if I can't understand half the languages Euro bands speak, the tunes are worth the time to track down.

Its all good, its y'alls stuff and I'm the one who's coming to beg for tunage. Just keep the riffs crunchy and the bass on 13, and my life is good.

When Washington, DC, had an oldies station, I think their entire playlist was 500 songs. My wife observed once, "If you only ever listened to them, you'd think Gordon Lightfoot only did three songs."

Hmm - When Doves Cry, the only Prince song on the list, is only at #490... Think that's the poorest representation for the wee man I've ever seen in any musical "Top X Y's" list.

Edit - Ah, until I saw that Q107 list, upon which he is not to be found at all. Very strange.

One of our local stations did a "Top 1000" thing this past weekend. They had about a month-long Internet survey to compile the list, and it was wide open - voters had to just type in the song/artist they wanted to vote for, no list to select from.

The whole list isn't online, but here's (http://www.q957.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=53&Itemid=22) the top 75.

I'm curious to know who else on this board has heard (or even heard of) the song (or band) at number 12, as they're a local act... :)

PS: ozzmosis should be happy to see that "Stairway to Heaven" was, indeed, the number one choice.
