Lllllllllllllllllllllladeeez and germs, preeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesenting the conclave of the year! The gathering to end all gatherings! The get-together fabled in song, story, and ancient Incan calendars! It's the Seventh First Annual Semi-Unofficial MidWestern Bad Astronomy Bulletin Board Denizens' HandShakin' Eyeballin' and BullSqueezin's StarGaze, Story Tellin', and Bar-B-Q!!!

Held in conjunction with (but not necessarily with the knowledge of) the Miami Valley Astronomical Society's Apollo Rendezvous to be held in Dayton Ohio on June 13 - 14, 2008, and hosted by the Miami Valley Astronomical Society and the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery!

People have long said that they'd show, if only the announcement of the event came out earlier in the year -- well, this oughtta be early enough for ya!

The theme for this year's Rendezvous is "Celebrating 90 years of Astronomy" -- this year marks the 90th birthday of what has evolved into the Miami Valley Astronomical Society!

Dates and times are:
Friday June 13th at 6:00pm to 10:00pm
Saturday June 14th 8:00am to 5:00pm followed by the BBQ & Star Party

While speakers are yet to be announced, there will be door prizes, the BIG raffle, telescope and astroimaging competitions, vendors of all your favorite astro-tchotchkes, the Swap Meet (c'mon by, say hi, see if you can sell some of your excess accoutrements), and of course, on Saturday night, the one the only the original SFASUMWBABBDHSEBSSGSTBBQ!!! The Saturday evening StarGaze and BBQ at the Association's dark sky observatory at John Bryan State Park, northeast of Yellow Springs, OH , now officially listed as Minor Planet Center Observatory H66 and the U.S. Air Force's Optical Satellite Tracking Station!

So, check your calendars, make your arrangements, schmooze with the boss, do whatever it takes! Make your plans NOW to attend one of the premier astro events in the MidWest, and to get together and have some fun with your fellow BABBloggees!

Technically, it's not earlier in the year, Charlie. ;) Post again in a month.

You never heard of the astrofiscal year?

is that a year based on the lunar cycle, like the islamic year?

Charlie in Dayton

No, it's based on monetary cycles, like the IRSlamic year...

I'm not familiar with that one. I think that's a good thing.

I'll consider attending, if you'll promise not to make fun of my telescope (Meade ETS60).

but really it was a suspension, like the monolith over Europa.

It's on my schedule. This may motivate me to finish my telescope. I've been theoretically working on it for the last 8 years. When I show up with it, I want everyone to wonder how such a junky pile of cardboard, plywood and plumbing supplies could actually work.

If it was an In-School Suspension, he can say he's on ISS!

Graybeard -- never would we make fun of anyone's optics as long as they're being productively used. On the flip side, we regularly rag on certain club members with rather expensive combination OTA's/dust catchers...there's more than one 60mm refractor or 3" reflector floating around the club. We've been known to give 'em away as door prizes at Rendezvous. Everyone's gotta start somewhere...

jfribrg -- get it working, c'mon to the Big Show and enter it in the telescope competition. You'd be amazed at some of the stuff that's there...and there's always the chance of it being People's Choice! If it works, who gives a flyin' fig what it looks like?
