I have a question about the capacity, because there is something I'm just not getting. The 8 gig Nano says it has "8 GB of space, or room for up to 2000 songs". My catalog on the laptop here is 3150 songs at 8.99 gigs. Is there a 2000 song hard cap, or can the capacity be higher than 2000 if the files are compressed enough.

It can be higher, but what you have to do is look at your average file size. They usually go for the smaller song file size to promote the device (meaning it's very likely you would never reach 2000 songs), so it just depends.

That's the "typical" size. They usually list the encoding quality and length of the track. I have a 30 GB iPod, but I use it as an external hard drive, so I have about 4 GB of music on it as well as my files.

I have a 4GB ipod and it says it can store 1000 songs, but since most of my songs are longer than usual singles, I can only fit something like 740 songs on it.
