Patriots vs Giants. Who do you pick to win?

Poor Favre. He deserved to get to the Superbowl, in what may be his last season. I feel bad for him, but as a Bears fan, I don't feel TOO bad. I wished him well during the playoffs.

So, can the Giants beat the Pats?

It's always possible, depending on which Tom Brady shows up. If it's the one from yesterday, the Giants might just pull it off. If it's the one from last week, forget it.

It's always possible, depending on which Tom Brady shows up....And that depends on how well the week's (in this case, two weeks') photo shoots went.

If there were numerous retakes then it might be yesterday's Brady. If there were a series of single takes deemed to be of commercial quality then look out, Jints.

While I was pulling for Brett and the Packers, they just didn't get the job done. My impression was that the Giants played a much better game. It seemed to me the game wasn't as close as the score indicated, if that makes any sense. While I wanted the Packers to win, they didn't earn it so they don't deserve it.

Whether Brett retires now or not, he's been a great player over the years. He just seems to love playing the game and never hesitated to get in the face of a linebacker that crossed him (very dangerous behavior). I'd be willing to bet that if you conducted a poll of active and recently retired players, Brett would be one of the most respected quarterbacks in recent times.

I'm rooting for the Patriots, but it is definitely possible for the Giants to beat them. The 'any given Sunday' idea still applies to the Superbowl, and the Giants have a deep collection of very high quality players.

Concerning the Packers, I also felt that it would be very cool for Favre to get to play in the Superbowl against Brady.

But hey...they are all good. Anyone who gets to this stage is good.
The Patriots have been REAL good.

The Giants played the Pats tough in the last week of the season, so I think they are certainly capable of beating them.

I'm not rooting for either team. I just wanna see a game that's better than the commercials.

Yes, it wasn't as if it was a real upset in terms of what happened on the field that day. A team that turns the ball over in their first overtime series doesn't deserve to win (let alone their other shortcomings, like that one touchdown drive by the Giants whose yardage seemed to come half from Packer penalties).

I was gratified to see the Giants beat the Packers, because I have a severe dislike for the way the Packers secondaries play. Bump-and-run coverage? More like rough up the receivers every down, safe in the knowledge that refs aren't comfortable calling defensive interference every down. It was especially rewarding to see Plaxico Burress beat Al "Motormouth" Harris repeatedly. Hey Al, how about playing defense with your legs, instead of your mouth, eh?

The conditions for that game were terrible but they were equal for both teams. It just seemed to me that the Giants performed better overall throughout the game. Sentiment is fine but it didn't get the job done. Brett's career is probably over but he's had a great run. I can't imagine him not getting into the Hall of Fame on the first vote.

As for the Giants vs Patriots, it has the potential for being a very good game. I hate blowouts and the Patriots have shown themselves to be human. The Giants made them work hard for the week 16 win. If Brady is hurt like the stories are saying, it could be hard for them to win the Superbowl.

**Not really. Love New England, love New York State, hate NYC. (believe it or not, never been to Boston, though often 20-30 miles away from it)Well, there's the problem.

As Chris "Boomer" Berman pointed out on Sports Center a few days back, ESPN is headquartered in Bristol CT, just about right on the Mason-Dixon line. This version of the line is the geographic division between New York (New Jersey) Football Giants fans and New England (Boston) Patriots fans.

Since I grew up in Fairfield County CT 35 miles NE of NYC, and learned football at the feet of my die-hard Yankees/Football Giants fan Irish uncle, I became and have been a New York Football Giants fan since c. 1955.

If that's being wrong, I don't want to be right.

Hey, there might be a C&W song in there somewhere...

Can somebody explain to me why people keep referring to the "New York Football Giants"? There is no other New York Giants team, and hasn't been for fifty years.*

It's getting to be about as precious as the Columbus alums who keep saying "The Ohio State University".

*(And I've never heard anybody talk about the "San Francisco Baseball Giants".)

I disagree. Although there may be such a line for Yankee and Red Sox fans (that's baseball), there are Giants fans all over New England. Mostly older folks who rooted for the Giants before the Patriots existed, or in the early years of the AFL when only the NFL was on TV. As an older New Englander, I like the Patriots but root for the Giants.

According to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Giants):

To distinguish itself from the professional baseball team of the same name, the football team was referred to as the New York Football Giants. Although the baseball team moved to San Francisco in 1957, the football team continues to use "New York Football Giants" as its legal corporate name.
The New York Giants baseball team had been around for some 40 years, so naturally it fell to the newcomers to distinguish themselves. :)

ETA: I should note that my last sentence is in reference to Donnie's comment about never hearing of the "Baseball Giants." :)

Well, didn't want to start a new thread, and it's related, so I'll post this here.

Report: Senator Wants To Reopen Pats 'Spygate' (http://www.thebostonchannel.com/sports/15192120/detail.html)

BOSTON -- Less than three days before the Super Bowl, a leading national lawmaker wants to reopen the New England Patriots spying investigation.
Now, Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, wants NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to face lawmakers, according to the New York Times.

I very much hope this isn't a sign of the fallout I feared might happen from the whole Baseball/Steroid craze. Why do these senators feel they need to get involved in sports? If you ask me, they should be arrested for derriliction of duty--they're waay out of line.

At least the Baseball issue involved illegal substances--but still that's a DEA issue, not a Senate issue. And this? Nothing illegal was done. A privately owned company voilated it's own rules, and was punished by itself.

The article, the Senator says, "It's akin to the CIA destroying tapes". Bull. The CIA is a government entity. The NFL has absolutely no obligation to keep (these kind) of records.

To me, it just seems these politicians have realized that the country pays more attention to sports than politics, so they're trying to make names for themselves. Personally, I prefer when politicians do what we elect them to do. Or at least, sit quietly and do nothing. Leave my sports alone!

But remember, it's "for the fans!". Wouldn't want to hurt ticket sales.

If they want to do something "for the fans", make it so tickets aren't upwards of a thousand dollars each. Fans are fans. They're rabid. They're irrational. And most of all, they're hearty.

Cleveland fan here...and Minnisota, GB, Buffalo, and Chicago know as well as I do that single-digit temperatures and bitter skin-tearing sleet don't stop the fans from attending the games. We're not related to the Wicked Witch of the West; percipitation won't melt us.

Give free beer and $20 tickets. THAT'S "for the fans".

Thousands. If not more. Officially licensed swag for both possible outcomes is always produced well in advance of the game and destroyed or warehoused afterwards. Sometimes the "could have been" merchandise gets out, but with the NFL getting evermore rectal about licensing rights every year that goes by, its becoming more litiginously hazardous to do so.

Well, I can't remember the last time a Superbowl was actually a good game. And I was hoping the Giants would win, but to put it in perspective, we were cheering for them the whole game, celebrated that fourth quarted TD pass...then twenty minutes after the game, on the way back to my car, my g/f said "You must be pretty happy, the Giants won" to which I responded "What? Oh, I don't care about that anymore"

Until the Browns make it to the big game, it's hard to really care much either way. But a good game is a good game, and that certianly was one.

The last really close Superbowl that I can remember was when the Titans came within one yard of winning as the clock ran out. It doesn't get much closer than that.

This was a good game, especially the 4th quarter. I watched it over at a neighbor's house who is a big Giants fan (he grew up there). Everyone was cringing when time was runnng out and it looked like the Giants had switched to a prevent defense. Fortunately, the Patriots scored with enough time left over for the Giants to score again.

Manning did quite well, but if I were him, I'd recommend the entire Giants defense as most valuable player. Even special teams played their part well with the punting game. That kept the offense in the game until they could break lose and score.

Not having a TV at home, I followed the game on the internet. I was rooting for the Giants because now the sports talk guys on the radio can argue for eternity about whether 17-0 is better than 18-1. If Boston had won, then of course 19-0 is better than 17-0 (even though I felt all along that the '72 Dophins dominated the league far more than the Patriots did this year). Here in Philadelphia, all they talked about this morning is how terrible is that a mediocre division rival is now the Super Bowl champ. According to these talking heads, we have reached rock bottom because Eli Manning got his Super Bowl ring before Donovan McNabb.

You can argue whether 17-0 is better than 18-1, or even 19-0. To me, it's not the W-L record that marks a true champion.

A true champion finds a way to win the games that matter most... the one that gets them into the playoffs, the ones that get them through the playoffs, the one that earns them the championship.

New York did that; New England did not.

I agree. The Patriots are a very good team but not among the best ever. They benefitted from playing a relatively easy schedule, and saved a couple of lost games with miracle finishes. One can argue that good teams find a way to win and that is true, but great teams are not trailing mediocre teams at the end of the game. The Patriots did that at least 3 times: once against the Eagles and twice against the Giants. Maybe more than that, but I didnt follow them that closely through the season. For this reason, I would have still considered the 72 Dolphins as more dominant than the 2008 Patriots regardless of the score last Sunday.
