View Full Version : Rough start to the morning for me

Driving in to work this morning, I spun my tires a bit coming out of the driveway (ice).

I knew to be careful, especially since there is a sharp turn at the end of the street which ends at a stopsign. The sharp turn can be precarious in snowy weather, so I was careful, dong 25-30 km/h.

The turn was no problem at all, so I continued on to the stopsign, and I applied my brakes. "Hmmm....why aren't my brakes doing anything?" I aksed myself as I was hoping that no one was going by the intersection at the time.

I was lucky that there was no one there, and the car stopped before I hit the snowbank...

No accident, no problems, but it shook me up for the rest of the day. I'll have to make sure I'm more careful next time

Just thought I'd share..

Black ice is a wonderful substance... not.

Even ABS can't help you when there's no friction between your tires and the road. I've had that "Gulp! Now what?" feeling once or twice, and it's no fun... except when you can tell everybody about it later.

Been there. Was driving home from Baltimore one a snowy day, thought I was going slow enough to maintain traction, but the wheels turned and the car didn't. Ended up broadsiding a wheel into a curb at speed (15 mph or so) and bending the rim. Drivable but the wobbling was helll for a week till I could get a new rim.

Last week when we had a bout of bad weather, my car did nearly the same thing. I was going through a neighborhood so I wasn't even going fast. I didn't slide all the way into the intersection, but even the few extra feet where you feel you have absolutely no traction is enough to make your heart skip a few beats.

There's nothing quite like that "Okay, what do I do now?" feeling when all four wheels lose traction like that.

Fortunately, I've never caused any damage when it's happened to me, but it's still scary as all get-out.
