What is the chemical properties of this drug that make it so powerful? I would probably have to say heroin. It's a very potent opiate. It is physically addictive. It doesn't put the phsical addiction of nicotine to shame. Its about the same. Crack might be a close second.
The ONE most common drug that completely and sometimes even permantly alters most of the brain's function is LSD.

In terms of effective dosage, LSD wins, hands down! The minimum effect dose is less than 1/100,000th of a gram.

I was going to say Nicotine, but I saw you mentioned illegal.
Poor nicotine addicts , glad the PTB is looking after OUR health by making all them nasty addictive cancer causing drugs illegal, no hang on wait a sec...
what's the difference between a crack addict and a nicotine addict?
One can go to the shop to feed their habit the other...well we've all seen it on tv!
Exactly!!! It's not that I am not a drug addict, it's just that the drugs I am addicted to are legal!!
It's not so much smoking as what you smoke.
One can have a drink, but woe to the smoker.

Botulism toxin. A drop will kill thousands.
Hey! You didn't specify "mind-altering" drug...

Get a hold of some BZ. It's even more powerful than LSD. Just ask the US Army!

Pharmacoepia
It sometimes takes a tiny bit
Of certain drugs to give a hit
That knocks you to your shaky knees
And makes you speak in Faeroese.
Start pharmacologic small:
Tetrahydrocannabinol.
Then you move up to LSD
Stepped on three times with PCP
If heroin don't do the trick
Add cocaine to increase the kick.
And if you somehow outwit death
Just wash it down with crystal meth.
If you can summon up the will
Some micrograms of fentanyl
Will probly finish up the job-
You massively addicted slob.

It's illegal for under-age drinkers.

alcohol is the most dangerous drug but it is legal.Alcohol is certainly not the most dangerous. It's certainly more dangerous than some, but not more dangerous than all.
Especially when it's considered that a great portion of illegal drugs don't exactly have measures of quality control in place to ensure quality.
I've read about Cocaine being laced with things like Ajax (it's white laundry powder), or things like marijuana laced with very small glass particles to imitate tricombs (part of the plant that indicates potency) and Hash being laced with metal powder in order to weigh it down.

Alcohol is more dangerous than all that you mentioned. Look at the number of car crashes, fights, abusive relationships, killings ... general stupid behavior.
I dont really believe the glass or metal powder thing ...
As far as the metal power weighing down. I think most people would know the rough size and it is much easier to rig a scale than to add metal powder
The glass particles thing ... I cant imagine that being difficult to detect.

You simply said 'most dangerous.' From that, I take 'direct, measurable health effects.'

Methamphetamines, though without a definition, it is difficult to determine what drug is the 'most dangerous'.

Got a load of tension
Burnin' up my neck
Something is wrong with my suspension
So pass those tablets to this wreck
I balance my Excedrin
And Anacins in stacks
I'm a pain reliever junkie
I got a Bayer on my back.
I went to see the doctor
He walked me down the hall
Said "Strip down 'til you're naked
Your suit, your tie and all."
Aspirin damage, Aspirin damage
Kills the pain, destroys the brain
Aspirin damage, my disadvantage
Sometimes I find myself shakin'
From the medication taken
Oh yeah.
