I'm just starting out. Both of these cost 350 Canadian. Which one is a better deal??

1. http://www.khanscope.com/productdetails.cfm?productID=270
2. http://www.khanscope.com/productdetails.cfm?productID=1561

I wish to start with something that would be perfect for all the basics. Something that would help develop this as a hobby.

Thanks

this question should be in the astronomical observations and equipment section, and should only have been asked once instead of twice. Maybe a Mod will move this?

Search the old messages in the equipment section, and you will find lots and lots of references to good information to review and understand in order to help you select the best telescope for you.

For the two you selected, the first is on a german equatoriail mount. Are you sure that is the best type of mount for you? The second is a Meade ETX which I generally do not recommend for someone as their only telescope or their first scope.

Others will mention a 6 or 8 inch Dob as a good choice for a first telescope. I agree with that, for most people, but it really depends on how you were going to use the scope and any constraints you have (price, portability, storage, ease of use, computerized or not, etc.)

I am suspicious that this is a spam message.

Neither. The first is far more complicated that a beginner can usually handle and tends to be very unstable compared to other designs. The second is a niche scope, not suited for general viewing unless your interests fit it. Even then there are better and cheaper options. For the same money there are scopes that will show you far more and better fit a beginner.

First read the sticky note on binocular astronomy.

Find an astronomy club in your area

Since you didn't give your location I can't be specific here.

They can show you at their star parties the various scopes they find useful in your conditions. You can learn what to expect from a telescope and where the best places to buy them are.
