And the font is a little too spidery to read easily. Making the font larger just makes it bigger and spidery.
Any suggestions?

Change the font. Options>Content>should be a font choice there.
In case that is too cryptic, go to the menu bar up top, select the Tools drop down menu, select "options", click the tab labeled "content". You will see font options.

What do you mean by spidery?
Also, do you use XP? If so, do you use Internet Explorer 7 normally?

If you are using a LCD monitor and Windows XP, turning on ClearType (http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypeInfo.mspx) to smooth edges of screen fonts and using Microsoft's ClearType Tuner PowerToy (http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx) may help.
On my 1680 x 1050 LCD display, I have also increased my DPI to 120 (125% normal size).

That was why I asked about XP and IE7. In XP, cleartype isn't the norm for most programs, but IE7 has it enabled by default. In Vista, it is enabled in all programs (so it is on for me in Firefox right now), but in XP, you would have to manually enable it for it to work in Firefox.

For me the quickest way to change font size is to press the Ctrl key and Scroll "up/down" on the mouse (Scrolling "up"---> decreases the font and down increases the size).

The latest service pack for XP is Service Pack 3, though if you have been good about running Windows Updates it doesn't do an awful lot as its mostly those rolled into one package (there are a couple of new bits though).
