Living in the shadow of the Philadelphia skyline is usually not easy if you are a sports fan, but not tonight. After all that time, the Phillies have finally won it all again. I remember the last one well. I was a thin 18 year old college student with a full head of dark hair. Now I have none of those attributes, but it doesn't matter. The economy may be teetering on the the edge of a greater depression. 2012 is only a couple years away. Global warming is about to boil away the oceans. We don't know it yet, but Alpha centauri just went supernova. The Zetans are about to unleash their wrath on us Earthlings who dare to ignore NL. All that doesn't matter because my Phillies have won the World Series, and therefore all is right with the world!!!

Does this mean you have to buy'em a new stadium? :)

He not only has to buy 'em a new stadium, but he has to invest countless millions in infrastructure. You can't make Cheese Fries unless you have fry-o-lators to cook the potatoes and some means to melt the gooey cheese.

But what would happen to us if Alpha Centuri did go supernova (I suspect it won't happen though)

It's not big enoiugh is it?
What is the rough estimate for the minimum safe survival distance from the average supernova?

The Zetans are about to unleash their wrath on us Earthlings who dare to ignore NL. Why in the world would the Zetans be National League fans?
What is the rough estimate for the minimum safe survival distance from the average supernova?Read the book (http://www.bautforum.com/bad-astronomy-book/57138-new-book-announcement-2.html#post1353033)! :)

May be that Texan chap, Sir Allen Stanford, just down the road from you, could be persuaded to buy you and your Phillies a couple of new stadia and everything that goes with them. He's got cash to burn.
We could then have our game back please.
Tomorrow is a dark day for cricket in the Windies. Never seen such an outrageous circus, being sold as cricket. :wall:

Bah. I was hopeing Tampa would win. Two-fold reasons--everyone loves a Cinderella story. Also, my Grandfather spent his retirement years in Tampa (read "suburb of"). If he was still around when the team was founded, I'm sure he'd be a fan.
(okay three fold reasoning--I really don't like Philly. No offense.) But, at least it wasn't Boston or the Yanks :)

I did not think it was, I was just entering into the OP's scenario.
Anyway is Phil's book available in the UK yet? Does it not have to prove itself in the US before world wide distribution?

All of the "experts" tell you that it can't go supernova, but then again all the "experts" said that the Phillies couldn't win either. So there.
So what if all the physics books are wrong. There won't be anyone left to read them anyway.
There is a twofold reason why I am happy. First is that the local team done did good. The second is all the exercise I got jumping on and off the bandwagon throughout the year. I don't take sports too seriously. I see it as entertainment. If I am enjoying the game, I continue to watch the game. If my team is losing or playing lousy, I turn the TV off. When they win it all (it's been a quarter century since that happened in my neck of the woods), then I retroactively become a life-long die-hard fan.

What if--Alpha Centauri A becomes a white dwarf, Alpha Centauri B becomes a red giant. I forget how far apart they are, but theoretically (with someone pushing them together as a prank, say) the outer gas shell of B captured by A could cause A to become a supernova.

jfribrg, congratulations to the Phillies. I've been to Philly a number of times and really like the town, so I'm happy for you.
Plus, as a long time Astros fan, I'm also glad Brad Lidge did so well. Even while struggling the last couple of years in Houston, he was always a stand-up guy.
