13 facts about Friday the 13th:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20090213/sc_livescience/13factsaboutfridaythe13th

This a.m. awoke [radio alarm clock] to news of 50 people killed in airplane crash near Buffalo, NY.

Then a rash of computer problems: 1st ISP connection not working. 2nd ISP connection required new password [preset by company]. New password wouldn't take until 5th try. Got in, then a major application won't open. Finally got to work. Then received a pop-up message that I'm to lock and then unlock the computer, to reset the new password [never saw this before]. It nearly didn't unlock the computer.

No, I'm not saying "I believe in" this superstition. But it sure has been a weird and trying day with this computer...!

I guess it depends on which folklore one subscribes.

Personally, I rather like Frigga... free spirits, love, fertility... yep I like Fridays.

Ah, that explaines it.

My puppy (okay so she's like 7 y/o) set a record this morning; a 2-hour long seizure that started 20 minutes before I have to leave for work, so I was almost 2 hours late. I think she's okay ... hopefully she'll still be okay when I get home. Tara was still there with her when I left. She says she seems to be done with it. It's gotta take a lot out of a pup to have a seizure that long.

Oh my goodness. Um...that sounds severe. :( In humans, seizures "shouldn't" last more than a minute or two.

How often does your dog have seizures?

sorry about the dog Fazor. But this friday the thriteen I have off so I do not have listen to a bunch of people complaining about it. Unfortunely I work tomorrow night when there will be a bunch of guys trying to find hotel rooms at the last minute and all of them must have jacuzzis. So I think Feb 14 is an unlucky day.

Fazor
13-February-2009, 05:05 PM
She's had them since she's a puppy. It's not grand mal the whole time, that'd kill her for sure. But she loses motor control (and, lucky for us, bladder, bowel, and ... "not throw up" control aswell). And she'll go in and out of grand mal.

I'm hopeing she's fine, but I couldn't take the day off to stay home and monitor her all day. She's had them before and always been fine... she may have even had longer ones (who knows when we're not home). But it's still sad/scarey.

Of course, work's not going much better either; but most of it is stuff that I've [messed] up and I'm just figuring it all out today. I guess the optimistic way to look at that there is it had to be fixed sooner or later, so lets get 'em all out of the way.

This happened Thursday night (the 12th), not on Friday.

Yes, I know -- but it was the 1st thing I heard upon awakening.

Not a good day's start, hearing about 50 people being killed. :(

That was my point. { :) }

Thanks for the update/info, Fazor. I hope your dog is feeling better now.

Further update. The levels of [whatever] that the meds are suppose to be came back on the low end. Target range is 10-40 [whatevers] and she's at 16. Vet said it should be safe to double the dose and hopefully that'll clear things up. Good news is it sounds like an easy fix. Bad news is that means our doggie-med budget just doubled.

Buttercup
13-February-2009, 07:01 PM
Yep, your dog's serum (blood) medication level is at the very lower end of range. Hopefully the double dose will work and there'll be no side effects.

13 facts about Friday the 13th:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20090213/sc_livescience/13factsaboutfridaythe13th
Quote from the link:

The next Friday the 13th comes in March, followed by Nov. 13. Such a triple whammy comes around only every 11 years, said Thomas Fernsler, a math specialist at the University of Delaware who has studied the number 13 for more than 20 years.

That is not true!!

If it were, the next triple-whammy year would be 2020. 2020 will be a leap year, so in order for it to be a triple whammy, January 13 must fall on a Friday that year. However, in 2020, January 13 will be a Monday.

The next triple-whammy year will be 2012, and the next after that will be 2015. That’s three triple whammies in seven years!

In the case of 2012 (a leap year), Friday the 13th will occur in the months January, April and July.

I'm guessing Mr. Fernsler said they happen an average of every seven years, and the reporter(s) misunderstood. :)

At least, I hope someone who's "studied the number 13 for more than 20 years" wouldn't get it wrong.

Okay, I hate responding to my own post, but I just noticed something that I had to note. The last time we had three Friday the 13ths in a single year was 1998 - 11 years ago. The last time before that was 1987, 11 years prior, and "more than 20 years" ago. Maybe Mr. Fernsler's studying just hasn't been any more in depth that than. :)

FWIW, it basically follows an 11-11-3-3 pattern, occurring four times every 28 years. I say "basically" because the Gregorian calendar screws up that pattern with its non-leap-year century years.

I almost made it through the day without anything bad happening. I went to sleep early so I set the vcr to record Battlestar and when went to play the tape the tape did not record any video just audio. I guess I have to wait till tomorrows re broadcast or try to get a torrent of it. It was a tape used a lot so I should of known better.

Aw, but superstitions are so much FUN. :) Anyone else here believe that "things go in 3's"? Seems so to me.

I didn't know that. :) Cool!

'Morning geonuc. :) An apartment building I lived in went from 12th Floor to 14th Floor.

And if asked how many floors the building had, the answer was always "14."

[...and lest we forget the seriously trouble-ridden Apollo 13, launched 13:13 hours on 4/11/70 = 13...]

Not saying I believe in the superstition. But it does get a bit strange sometimes.

7. Fidel Castro was born on Friday, Aug. 13, 1926.

Hmmm. Which is to prove what? That to be a sucessful revolutionary, you should be born on Friday the 13th? Castro became the leader of a country. I don't see any jinx in that!

13. The seals on the back of a dollar bill include 13 steps on the pyramid, 13 stars above the eagle's head, 13 war arrows in the eagle's claw and 13 leaves on the olive branch.

That's probably the reason that the dollar never became a popular international currency. And why the US never became a powerful country. The fact that the US has always remained a poor backward country is probably because of that...

Mahesh, you just made me misty-eyed!

I lived in an apartment that would have been 13, they called it 12A, instead. I have news for the people that chose that number and those in row 12A or 14 should they just skip 13, the same for floor numbers; you are actually on 13.

I wonder also, the worst aviation accident in history (in Tenerife) happened on March the 27th. Why didn't it happen on the 13th? You would think that if somebody was making a jinx, at least they would have the decency to make the worst one take place on the proper date! And to boot, it wasn't even a Friday. It was a Sunday...

I came across a reference to the Tenerife
accident a year ago that surprised me. In
The Kenneth Williams Diaries he recorded he
had just landed there for a holiday and was
waiting in the bus with others for their
luggage when the tragedy happened. So a
sombre few days and no luggage. I then picked
up an old National Geographic and realised I
was looking at the KLM advert that featured
the Dutch captain involved!

... [...and lest we forget the seriously trouble-ridden Apollo 13, launched 13:13 hours on 4/11/70 = 13...]

Not saying I believe in the superstition. But it does get a bit strange sometimes.
Really?

Now let me see, Apollo 13 was launched on Saturday, April 11, 1970 at 13:13 CST.

Oh wait! CST? Hmmm, I could have sworn Apolo 13 was launched in Florida. So that would be 12:13 *EST*. Daylight savings time started on April 26 in 1970, so no luck there. If we're going to play the bad luck game, Houston's clock is irrelevant.

Now, if there really is any such thing as bad luck, it should be a universal principle, seeing that it doesn't befall only individuals but, according to superstitious minds, also groups and even entire civilizations.

So, the principle of 13 and especially of Friday the 13th, sets a few intereseting prerequisites on the universe, as far as its principles are concerned.:

1. The universe is based on the decimal system of counting.

2. The universe adheres to the Gregorian calender.

3. The universe uses Earth's International Date Line for some things, and ignores it for others.

4. The universe runs by the Prime Meridian (Greenwich) and adheres to a set of 24 time zones in abrupt hourly jumps, even where these are rearranged by political boundries, making them geographically incorrect.

5. The universe respects daylight savings time in all its variations, intervals, and dates.

6. The universe abhors the baker's dozen.

etc.

Oh wait! Stop! In many cultures, 13 is a lucky number.

Damn, back to square one.

Superstitions? Errrr, no. Strange? Errrr, no.

There should be at least 3 one-day corrections before the year 10,000 since the Gregorian calendar is accurate to one day in 3000 years

Not a good day's start, hearing about 50 people being killed. :( ]

If you get up, go to the refrigerator, and come back to sit down, there is a good chance 50 people will have died during that time. But they do it quietly, not like these showboats.

Francisco, that was rather poor taste. The people killed in that plane weren't "showboats", this wasn't some reality TV they were showing off for, they were innocent victims. Please keep this civil.

Oh my Buttercup!! You made me laugh alot just now. It is okay to look and admire.

Yep...but this was more along the lines of "5 seconds from a full-blown coronary if I keep looking." He's exactly my ideal of good looks - and a rock musician [amateur/local] to boot. :shifty: Powerful combination.

I feel the same way when i look at pictures of Daniel Craig or Max Beasley or Sean Bean or Clive Owen or...;)

You go girl!

Chuck, must you post all those numbers?? I'm allergic to numbers - stop, mercy!

Just think what would have happened if my database system hadn't crashed on the year 10,000.

That was stated in poor taste, as Swift mentioned already. But the point is relevant. I wonder if the 50 people dying in that accident actually had any statistical relevance to the total number of human beings that died that day. I just did a rough calculation, and if you take 6 billion people, and divide that by an average lifespan of say 70 years (quite optimistic) and then by 365, you get something like 250,000 people dying per day. I don't think that 50 is a blip.

lets see what hapend to me on friday the 13th? i played world of warcraft and raided blackfathom deeps... and thats preaty much it!

I ran that for the first time in two years on ... Sunday? Saturday? I forget now.

And an update for anyone concerned; Charlie (my pup) seems to be doing well on the increased dosage; though it's too early to tell for sure (once she has a seizure, it's usually a few weeks before she'd have another one regardless). She's definitely back to her old trouble-causing self for the time being.

That's good to know. :) Sure, it'll take time to see what effect the increased dosage has; hopefully a real improvement. A loved one of mine suffered with bad seizures for a couple of years, and then received an implant device [with 80% improvement]; seizures take such a toll on the afflicted. :(

Yeah. My g/f's oldest nephew had seizures real bad when he was younger. They've had him on medication since, and I guess he hasn't had one in years (he's around 12 y/o now). From what I understand, they've just recently (sometime this year) began weening him off the medication at doctor's orders. So far, so good it seems.

It's tough enough with a pet; but when people have them, it's a very scarey thing.

Many of course of old age and not ripped out of their prime, yet still, it's true.

When the Oscars come around, we'll see loads of people getting all teary eyed about one millionaire actor who overdosed himself on drugs, while not one single word will be said about the high number of drug related deaths that happen *during* that show, not to mention all the others that happen every day.

If a Hollywood party girl backs into a parking car, it's on the national news. What about all the innocent children killed in car accidents every day by drunks on the road? Maybe on page three of the local paper.

Nothing to do with 13. Lots to do with reality.

In fairness, Kleindoofy, the entertainment industry has every right to pay respects to a colleague who's passed on the same way you'll see threads on BAUT when famous scientists, writers, etc pass away. That doesn't necessarily mean you think their death is any more important than anyone else's. It's just showing respect to someone in your peer group.
