Hi there. Just thought I would get everybody to check their internet speeds. I'm actually more interested in upload speeds than downloads. I can get 0.73 as my best upload. What's yours? Check on the site and post yours. I'm led to believe that my upload is below average fro the world. Just wanted to check with everybody else.
Heres mine.

Go to www.speedtest.net and check yours for your own P.C.

By the way my global rank is for my download speeds. It doesn't really care about upload speeds for global ranking.

At this time of day, my download speeds are great since it's a cable modem. It will deteriorate later in the day when kids get home from school and people get home from work. My uploads are pretty consistent though.

1.2Mb Down, and 13.33 up. (50 miles)
but; go farther, and it appears to balance out
1.22Mb Down, 0.48 up (2750 miles)

This service is advertised as 6 Mb/1 Mb so I'm doing okay. Upload seems a bit lacking.
This is running through ZoneAlarm and a hardware firewall/router if that makes any difference.
I'll have to try this from work tomorrow where I regularly see 3+ MB/s - that's megabytes - on downloads.

Is this speed test accurate? I tested my home computer, which is on Comcast cable, and got surprisingly high numbers. But it seems doggish. I know that cable connections suffer when too many people are logged on.

They suffer when too many people are using the bandwith.
The bandwith is shared. As long as no one is using its connection, its all yours up to your maximum connection speed.

All that for 19.90 E a month. It is an ADSL 512Kb line. If I have been a little smarter I could have had a 1 Mb connection for the same amount. If I upgrade to 29.90 E / month I can have a 8 Mb ADSL connection. That the maximum where I live. But I am not sure I will do it , I like too much my hard won Euros to let them go in Orange (France Telecom) pocket !

Better still at some friends' house whilst feeding their cat. I was expecting better from a cable connection that claims 100 Mb/s, although I'm limited to 54 Mb/s by my wireless card.

Does the isp really claim 100Mb/sec? That's the standard connection speed within a local area network, but that is not the normal speed for an actual internet line. You probably could get 100Mb/sec if you were transferring between two computers on the same LAN in your house, but it's not surprising that the internet connection itself is far slower than that.
Chuck
03-May-2009, 12:57 AM
That's what I was told but maybe they misunderstood what they were getting or I misunderstood them. Before I got my wireless card I hooked up to their router with a cable and my connection seemed incredibly fast, much faster than what I'm getting now. That was a few years ago, though. YouTube videos arrived at several times the actual playing speed. Now the incoming video is barely staying ahead of the actual playing of it.
You're probably right, though. I was never getting 100 Mb/s from The Internet.
Chuck
03-May-2009, 01:52 AM
It looks like the best speed offered by Cox Communications is 20 Mb/s. I'm certainly not getting that but this isn't my house so I don't know what they actually signed up for.

Honestly, I don't see it as anything to complain about - although I really like the stupidly fast internet I used to have, there's nothing wrong with ~20Mbit cable.

Looked at the companies that provides this speed tests website they have on their advert screen showing their computers a really messy desk with a empty bottle of Jack Daniels on it. Id love for the totally wrecked people at that company to look after my business needs. Anyway back to Stratford apparently its closer to me than London. Though I still get better connections if I do a test on Amsterdam server. Weird

Actually, there isn't that much of a difference between 100Mbps and 10Mbps in most cases. A lot of download servers can't supply the full connection, so it isn't quite as fast as you might think. Of course, when you get a good server, it's amazing - I downloaded MATLAB R2008b in something like 40 seconds when I was offered the free upgrade from r2007a for example.
