As most of you know, a 50-1 longshot won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. What I find most interesting is that the winning horse was a gelding. Does anyone know why such a fast horse would be "gelding-ified"? It seems that for top race horses, 90% of the income comes after the horse is put out to stud. I assume the procedure occurred before the horse's value was known or that the horse was too aggressive, and wouldn't have been allowed to compete otherwise.

The bit I caught was from what my girlfriend was telling me; that the horse was bought for less than her boss was asking for his horse (which was about $1,100). I'm assuming the people the sold the horse (probably the ones that had it gelded) did not know the horse's potential. I'd also guess those who bought it didn't realize what a find they had either, at first.

I have no idea, but if I had to hazard a guess- to keep his mind on the job? Especially if he was thought to have potential (which he obviously did)...
Hmmm...why does David Beckham come to mind?

Good story! :)May 2, 2009
The cowboy and his horse beat them all...Trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. hitched Mine That Bird to the back of his pickup and drove to the Kentucky Derby from New Mexico...the ninth gelding to win the Derby...
