I predict that for North Americans during Saturday morning 2009 MAY 23, Jupiter’s Galilean satellite #2 Europa (3121.6 km) will totally transit #1 Io (3642.6 km) for just 18 seconds. Almost a perfect bull’s-eye! This will be a nighttime event out west and a daytime event in the east.
#2 Europa Transits #1 Io
2009 MAY 23 PDT (UT-7)
04:45:44 PDT Partial Transit Begins
04:47:34 PDT Total Transit Begins
04:47:43 PDT Minimum Separation of Centers
04:47:52 PDT Total Transit Ends
04:49:42 PDT Partial Transit Ends
I’ve created two related graphics previewing the event. They can be seen at: http://www.curtrenz.com/astronomical.html
Photos, descriptions and timing verifications would be welcome additions to this thread.
