If you're ever interested in helping astronomers with their research, you might want to consider volunteering some time for the American Association of Variable Star Observers.
You can check out their website here: http://www.aavso.org/ Take a look at the projects they need help with. They also have some great guides on how to watch variable stars. Get involved!
