Default What's the object in tonight's sky? 11/10/07

I love astronomy although I'm an amatuer. I was out tonight looking at the various stars and noticed something I've never seen in my life. At 9:10 PM, I was looking to the East. I noticed a round patch of light which almost looked like how a spot light would look hitting the clouds at night. However, there are no clouds in my area. The sky is crystal clear. I thought my binoculars had frost and was fooling me but the spot is stationary next to a bright star (or other galaxy). What am I seeing? It looks like a white haze.

Thanks!
Erick

You might be seeing comet Holmes? (17P/Holmes) Which we saw tonight! (Thanks to a flat tire.

Wikipedia has a good (not great) collection of photos here you can compare against.

Except for the direction, I would agree that it sounds like Holmes. The comet is more north at that time of night, at least from here in central Texas.

When these types of threads are created, it would be nice if the observer's location was given.

Agreed.
Plus more precise directions in the sky - say 45 degrees up-NNE or whatever.
and any bright stars nearby, even if they don't know the names.

Hopefully this won't be one of those "1-post threads" where the originator never responds again.
