Question Beginners' Observing Tools?

How about some useful tools for the beginner - tools that should be the most important in order to keep the beginner interested in the hobby and insure success in observing from day one?
What would you consider the four most important tools a beginner should have? My suggestions are:
1. A fairly dark observing site

2. A pair of binoculars (preferably 10x50s)

3. A planisphere

4. A star/DSO atlas

Red LED to read the maps.

Warm clothes/hat/gloves for winter; bug repellent for summer.
