Default Anyone seen NGC 253 from as far north as Edmonton AB (53 deg. north)?

...am wondering if I am going to be able to see it this Fall. (I think you can see Fomalhaut up here and NGC 253 might be more northerly).

To see how high an object can get in your skies first determine your declination on the meridian at the horizon. This is just your latitude -90 degrees. For 53 north that is 53-90=-37 so in theory any object with a declination greater than -37 is above your horizon. To determine how high it is in the sky just subtract the above (-37) from the objects declination. You can look that up a lot of places on the net. NGC 253's declination is about -25.3 degrees. Subtracting you get -25.3-(-37)=11.7 degrees. So yes it is above your horizon but likely severely dimmed by our atmosphere. You'll need to get well south of Edmonton in dark skies but it should be visible in binoculars. Yes Fomalhaut is at -29.6 degrees so is about 4 degrees further south.

That's encouraging. If it's low I guess I can't expect shape and detail comparable to M31 through binoculars. I would be pleased to get a similar view to that of a high M81.
