I think madcomit thought s/he was posting, about the size of the 2012 doomsday asteroid, in this thread:

Madcomit made one other post there.

Ahhh, ok. After seeing the last post on that thread, I guess this is understandable.

Considering that, what are the odds "they" can pinpoint you for giving out this obviously confidential data?

This is an ad hominem, and irrelevant. Some people type/post quickly, others have innate problems with spelling. Either way, this is uncalled for. Donnie B., first and only warning.

So, let's see:
  • NASA has discovered an object the size of Missouri which will definitely impact the Earth in 2012.
  • NASA (or the Air Force?) has also determined that this object is accreting material, much like the way the planets formed in the early Solar system, at such a prodigious rate that in 8 years it will have grown to the point where it's only slightly smaller than Texas. (Where is it getting this new material from?)
  • NASA and/or the Air Force have decided to keep this information super-secret and not release it to the public, despite the fact that such a large object could be detected by other astronomers not affiliated with NASA.
  • You and/or your wife, however, were somehow privvy to this information without being sworn to secrecy about it.
Perhaps you and/or your wife were the victims of a cruel hoax?

Or it could be a test to see if you can keep secrects.

Tell someone about an end of the world event then see if they blab.

Sort of like the testing done on the people in the missle bunkers to see if they would launch if told to.

I think "Smaller Than Texas" is a poor discription as it is rather ambiguous and not necessarily indicitive of size. I'm smaller than Texas! (six feet for reference)

True as...
1) Everything is smaller than Texas.

2) The use of the word "Texas" serves as hyperbole to force you to think big but, of course, not as big as "Texas" (as per rule 1).

"hyperbole - exaggeration for emphasis or rhetorical or dramatic effect"

[Although astronomers have found objects physically larger than Texas, the largest object in the universe is still undetermined, but I am confident they will call it "Texas" at the appropriate time.]

8)

I thought there was a move afoot to rename the Universe 'Texas', which would settle things once and for all. Not to mention the 'Big Bend' theory of its inception.

BTW, when did it change from 'Texian' to 'Texan'? I heard one theory as a youngster, but it could be construed as insulting.

Sorry. 'Texian' goes back to the original... Texians, I guess. 19th century.

And if any of my cousins down around Beaumont-Port Arthur are reading, hi! :P

When I visited Alaska they were very proud of the fact that Alaska was the biggest and Texas was #2. If you cut Alaska in half, Texas would be #3.
Ok, we are now officially completely off topic. Glad I could do my part.

Alaska is much bigger than Texas. As per 2000 estimates, Alaska measured 571,951 square miles in land area compared to 261,797 square miles of Texas land area.

The advancements in M-Theory, which promotes the idea of other universes (possibly larger), has stalled this christening.

I feel sure you are correct. Seems like in John Wayne’s “Alamo” they used that term and have heard it on rare occasions.

“Texas” comes from the name “Tejas” which was an Indian tribe. I am not much on history. [There is some question as to my knowledge of geography, too. ]

Speaking of Alaska… after one allows for future melted ice and adjusts for the gross errors indicative to the northern region in maps based on the Mercator projection, Texas is the big one.

Ok, ok…I just wanted to climb a woo-woo stage and see what it was like up here…[takes in view]…. Not bad considering the humor factor and the attention received. But, I only kissed the Blarney stone once and I am not really a great extrovert to boot, so…

The truth is I am gonna wish I was in Alaska in a couple more weeks thanks to the summer solstice. Although I will likely never say it again, Texas is not the biggest state physically. But don't let anyone know I told you.

Since we're firmly off-topic...

Texian is a Republic of Texas term, first appearing in 1835, used to identify the Anglo inhabitants of the former Mexican state. It was meant to inspire nationalistic pride in the Republic. After annexation by the United States in 1845, the term Texan became the norm, and Texian gradually fell into disuse.
