Default Doomed matter observed around a black hole

Cambridge Scientists Follow Doomed Matter on a Ride Around a Black Hole

Quote:
Scientists have pieced together the journey of a bundle of doomed matter as it orbited a black hole four times, an observational first. Their technique provides a new method to measure the mass of a black hole; and this may enable the testing of Einstein's theory of gravity to a degree few thought possible.

Boy ... this stuff just keeps getting better and better. Here at UF yesterday we had an astrophysics symposium and heard about the latest results in cosmology, planet finding, and gravity wave observing. All exciting and all illustrating the intimate connection between modern observational astronomy and fundamental physics.
