Default The ISS needs a canary

I suppose there would be problems having a bird in zero-g.

Surely the bird would still be able to fly around because there's air in the ISS, or am I missing something fundamental? :-?

It might keep hitting the ceiling because it's expecting gravity, and there is none.

Not to mention the final product of their gastro-intestinal functions flying around...

Heinlein covered this in Waldo. It may be that birds might have to be hatched in space, or else they could not adapt to the conditions. They would certainly be interesting to watch. A couple of wingbeats to get up to speed, tuck wings to coast, wings out to brake.

The first time I read about a bird in a spaceship was in an A. Clarke short-story titled "a feathered friend", if I can remember well.

Never mind taking just a bird. Take a bird and a cat. That should be fun

I'm actually suprised that nobody seems to have taken a bird into space. I searched around quite a bit for an example, and couldn't find one. Did I miss something?

I have a vision of the cat thinking it is falling, which it is, and trying to land on it's feet. Probably end up doing a few thousand RPMs.

I think that cats (and dogs) would learn to adapt to zero gee.

Still, It'd be fun to watch if you just placed a cat in the middle of a spaceship (where it couldn't touch anything) and just spun it

You re cruel! Put your self in the cat's place and decide how "fun" it would be!

OK, we let him (cat) adapt nicely. He's floating along comfortably trying to find where the canary went when we clap our hands behind him. What does he do? Massive twitch?

We'll need to put about a square meter of indoor/outdoor carpet on each surface to give the cat anchor points!

It would be an interesting match, regardless, particularly if both animals were fully adapted to microgravity, assuming there were anchor points

The bird would have the advantage of being able to alter direction mid-flight. The cat, of being able to catnap until the bird simply drops (well, floats, actually) of exhaustion and stress.

This is trending toward Against The Mainstream experiments, isn't it?

The canary would starve as they do not digest their food by peristalsis like we do - they rely on gravity to get their food down (or so I heard!).
