I'm going to Tahiti in mid September of this year. This will be my first look at the souther hemisphere sky since 1974. Also, the first time this far south. I plan to hit all of the biggies like the LMC, SMC, and other stuff that's usually visible most of the year.

Anybody have any suggestions about what to look for in the way of seasonals? Will Eta Carinae be up? The southern cross? The only eye dressing I'll have is 10X50 bino's

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

(edit to add bino comment)

Do you remember when ToSeek asked a similar question about Costa Rica a while back?

First thing I'd look for would be Canopus, still.

Already covered! Two dives scheduled so I can look down at the stars (fish) as well as up.

Canopus is the second brightest star in the sky, and is up there in absolute magnitude as well. Alas, I don't think it is visible in Tahiti in September. I somehow don't think it will spoil your trip. Bon voyage.
