Default Balloon-borne telescope

Apparantly a group launched a balloon-based telescope over the arctic a week ago. Generally things went okay with the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimetre Telescope (BLAST, who comes up with these names? ). Anyone know much else about the project?

Some smart cookie in the department who knows you get more funding if you have a cute, memorable, and easy to pronounce acronym. They could just as easily have called it the Grand Télescope Ballon-soutenu de Secondaire-millimètre D'Ouverture, but then they'd have had to try and sell a GTBSD'O to the Suits.

Or, a D'Oh for short...Not a good sign.

Space telescope has safe landing

Quote:
Dubbed the "the flying stadium" by its designers and engineers, BLAST stands for Balloon-borne Aperture Submillimeter Telescope. It contains data that are expected to reveal what scientists call lumpy space, the ingredients that formed the first galaxies and stars in the universe.

Wildlife Crowds Around Arctic Telescope

Quote:
"The secret of our universe's beginnings was being protected by caribou and polar bears," said John Kageorge, communications manager for AMEC Dynamic Structures Ltd. in this Vancouver suburb. "As it turns out, the scientists needed to go back with a rifle to protect themselves."
