I have taken the sunspots to the old Galileo and sunspots thread.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but I can't stand this quiz to die. It's why I signed on three years ago.

Our current question is:

I have done some searching looking for e.g. some planetary probe that got accelerated enough to leave on an escape trajectory instead of a Solar orbit, but no luck. So I am stuck with the five probes George named.

As there have been no further attempts at a solution, maybe spin0 can solve this. I'll be happy to defer to George, spin0 or to anyone who solves the question to ask the next one, but I'll allow myself to try to get the quizz going again with this one:

Where in the Solar system and by wich spacecraft was this photo taken; what are the three prominent features in it, where are they located, and what are their names?

I'll try the obvious, Mars, though the river channels are a bit too outstanding for Mars.

George, I thought you would say this - with all the beautiful colours in the image , and the nice perspective. But no, it is not MRO (and, of course, not Phoenix )

The image isn't very recent.

Not recent, heh? I'll guess Viking then.

Perhaps Hadriaca Patera on the northeast rim of Hellas basin?

Ok, probably not Mars Express. Perhaps Mars Odyssey. I assume I got the region correct.

Well, answer my question first...

But OK, if you insist: It is 4,22 Ly to Proxima Centauri, or 2,479,081,906,200,000 international miles.

No to both. We have already established that the fotos are from the surface of Mars, and Cassini never visited there.

The one and only.

George, do you agree with my usage of "not very recent"?

Hint time: You are looking for the names of the three elongated features, two of which coalesce into one. Two of the names are astronomical, one of them denotes Mars itself. The third is named after a feature on Earth.

If you want the cigar, don't forget loacation and geological nature

Nigers Valles one? [Added. It is clear that your region is along the ENE region of Hellas Basin, but I am having trouble finding names for this area. My earlier image captures and matches part of yours.]

Score two for George (although it's Niger, not Nigers; to my knowledge, the region doesn't have a name except that it belongs to Promethei or Tyrrhena terra, depending on where you draw the line). Region and one valley named.
