Is the last question automatically the current question?

Is talking about whether the last question automatically the correct question helping anyone? :P

No, any unanswered question or unconfirmed question is the last question. Someone could know that the last answer to the last question could be wrong, so that question still stands unless confirmed otherwise. But there could be an unanswered question above that was never addressed, so the last question is simply an unanswered question or unconfirmed question.

The last question, not yet confirmed:

Eroica asked:
Where would you be most likely to observe atomic oxygen emission at wavelength 557.7 nanometres?

Arneb answered:
On Earth - or from earth orbit, over the nightside. There is an emissive layer of atomic oxygen, somewhere in the upper atmosphere. The emision is drowned by daylight, so you have to go to the nightside.
True? Is this emission caused by cosmic radiation, by the way?

That's a good question. When do we get around to the correct question?

PS: arneb's question about "so here we are" is still hanging, as is mine about Venus. There may be others back there.

I just posted that above. But I would suggest anybody ask a new question.

Unconfirmed:

Eroica asked:

Unanswered:

ATP:

With all that change in area, and its shifting phases (ignoring the times when it is very close (a solar diameter) to the Sun), how many magnitudes does the apparent brightness of Venus vary?

Guessed but no confirmation:

Arneb asked:

"So here we are." What book, what occasion?

edit typo...too much coffee

you answered about the last question, champion_munch's question was asking about the correct question, which so far as I know has never come up before. Do we have to answer it?

My guess is -4.7 to -3.9; so 0.8 magnitudes.

I'm going to hit you any second, ATP, you're confusing the questions.

Unconfirmed:

Eroica asked:
Where would you be most likely to observe atomic oxygen emission at wavelength 557.7 nanometres?

Arneb answered:
On Earth - or from earth orbit, over the nightside. There is an emissive layer of atomic oxygen, somewhere in the upper atmosphere. The emision is drowned by daylight, so you have to go to the nightside.
True? Is this emission caused by cosmic radiation, by the way?

Answered but not confirmed:

ATP:

With all that change in area, and its shifting phases (ignoring the times when it is very close (a solar diameter) to the Sun), how many magnitudes does the apparent brightness of Venus vary?

C-Munch answer: My guess is -4.7 to -3.9; so 0.8 magnitudes. Is he right, ATP?

Guessed but no confirmation:

Arneb asked:

"So here we are." What book, what occasion?

-4.7 to -3.7? 1 whole magnitude? I can't find any sources that suggest the number is higher than -4.7 or lower than -3.7, so I'm giving up after this go. :P

That was my answer.

I guess there could be circumstances that change that (like Mercury blocking the sun's light to Venus), but let's go with that for now. That's still amazing to me, considering the variation in Venus's size that George pointed out, that the distances should compensate so that its brightness is so unvarying. That was one of the characteristics of Venus noticed by the ancients.

I thought you were hanging around for a bit? It's been 2 hours, and you've made only one post since and you haven't answered any of the questions that are REALLY starting to bother me..... :P
