CME's? They're transient.

Aha! Joan Hirshberg (maiden name). I had forgotten Feynman played drums. [I play a little guitar. Hmmm...would drums help? ]

Nice going, Mike.

I was going to say either sunspots or CME's. Guessed right.

In 1947 John Strong, who developed vacuum aluminization in the 1930's, was asked to come to Palomar to aluminize the new Hale telescope mirror. As part of the surface preparation he uniformly coated it with a thin film of a special fatty acid which was then burned off with a glow discharge, leaving a clean surface.

What was the commercial name of this invaluable mirror preparation material?

It keeps your hair in trim, George. With soothing lanolin.

Over to you.

If it grows hair, I'll try - burning and vaccuuming if necessary.

Hope you don't mind a little easy math...

Some Booleans, legendary logicians from a remote island, must determine, with great accuracy, the new length of their damaged spaceship. This ship’s exterior reflects light in the same direction from which it came (i.e. small prisms similar to the Apollo placed lunar mirror that McDonald’s Observatory hits with their laser routinely). The Boolean’s have a powerful laser system that is taken to a remote small island. After installing the “No Anthropologist Allowed” sign, they set-up and start tracking the ship. They are able to align to the tip of the nose of the ship due to a transmitter at this location. It is a cloudless day.

Given:
The ship is traveling at 15 km/sec. and perpendicular to them.
The ship is 1000 km distance.
The ship is 100 meters in actual length (after damage has occured).
c = 300,000 km/sec

Required:
Will they see the reflected laser beam?

Here is a hint. The thread addresses the only minor subtle trick in the question. Don't get hung up with the Boolean folks as I ended-up rushing the question so I could go out of town; the Booleans were not used as I had originally intended. [My hope was to ask what color they would observe, but it would have been hard to structure it nicely with so little time.]

If the laser beam is reflected in the same direction from which it came, it will return to the point of transmission ... so, yes, they will see the reflected beam.

What am I missing here?

You are either correct or incorrect. What does your math say?

The solution is is really straight forward, forget all the fluff.
