No, but you're on the right track, sort of at least.

Will this require a bright answer? (or delta bright answer)

The answer of gas giants is warmer, so to speak, than the answer of terrestrial planets but think far, far bigger.

None of these objects have gotten that far yet but four of the others have.

Spacecraft? 4 of them (Pioneer 10+11, Voyager 1+2) have left the solar system.

Though I'm not sure about this as there may not be a consensus definition of solar system boundaries.

Plus as you said, think bigger. Spacecraft tend to be smaller than gas giants.

There is a relatively new class of stars that produce a blast of light for no known reason. V838 Mon is one of these and there is at least one other, so maybe now there are four total.

Gotten that far yet doesn't imply traveling through space in this case.

George is now on the right track but one must think collectively to reach the correct answer.

Collectively as in stars in a group but that's only part of the answer. What do these groups lack when compared to other members of a collection of objects that are related in a historical manner?

Is that confusing enough without giving it away outright?

Assuming it has nothing to do with a bicycle (I have no idea where Eroica is going with that), does the answer involve the Messier catalog?

Yes, or perhaps I should say oui, there is definitely a "French Connection"!

I like the bludgeoning method still....

Globular clusters would fit the "stars in a group" easy enough. There are certainly many Messier objects that fit that bill, but Dave has added unusual emphasis with his "French Connection" phrase. I can't imagine any drug reference. Hmmmm.

Recently, APOD showed a video of numerous stars that brightened significantly, and do so nightly, in M3. Perhaps three other clusters show these fast cycle stellar brighteners.

George,

There was no "unusual emphasis" intended. I was planning on using The French Connection as a clue at some point to refer to Charles Messier so I threw it in at that juncture.

I think that a clarification is in order. The four objects all have a general similarity in that they are comprised of more than one star. However, that is really irrevelant to the answer. All four of them have something in common that makes them different from the rest of the Messier objects.

Just a guess:
M27, M57, M76 and M97; the four planetary nebulae of the Messier catalog?

Well, it's already been established that these objects consist of more than one star and have not evolved to the planetary nebula stage. The "four of the others" that I mentioned earlier are, in fact, M27, M57, M76, and M97.

I'll drop a hint that dwelling on their physical characteristics is heading down the wrong path.
