Thanks for your support Laser Jock, but I really have had a paradigm change in attitude towards computers: I now hate and fear them. They will never in my lifetime, IMO, be easy (for me) to use, reliable, or easy to restore. I intend to use this old one only for essentials.

So the two teams do need a new founder.

There are no actual duties, and the only responsibility is to not misuse the email list. Most team founders found, and then do nothing more. I am a freak in that regard, being attached to this fine board, and having had spare time. As seen from the lack of problems posted here the last few months, the team really runs itself now. If something actually happens, like orbit@home starting, I'm sure someone will post here.

If you all can't agree on a founder by discussions here, in a week I'll send a team email asking for volunteers.

Thanks again to all of you.

There is a conspiracy against the BABB team, one of my computers went down about 4 days ago. The processor seems to have died. It will be a while before I can replace it, I have to pay for college first (which is not pretty).

If you are set in this, then I cannot really argue I guess, but I think that you have been a terrific founder, I would be sad to see you go. Also, I see no reason that you would need to stop founding the team, afterall the amount of work you contribute to the project really does not matter.

Unfortunately, this is the way computers are, I have built many computers and have had more problems than I can even recall. There seems to always be a problem. The key is patience in learning about the problems and then in solving the problems. There was a time that I had given up on computers, only to be drawn back in when a family member needed help with theirs. Since then, I have never stopped learning about computers.

Edit to add: What are yourr plans for the one that had the disk crash, maybe I can help you out.

I might be back up sooner than I thought. I had convinced myself that it must be the motherboard or processor that was failling, but on the suggestion of a friend, I took out my (relatively) new high-speed memory and put my old value RAM back in. Problem solved. Prime95 ran for 9 hours, 40 minutes last night with no errors or warnings. =D> =D> It wasn't overclocked, but it was obvious that my motherboard and processor are fine. I plan to do a few more tests over the next couple of nights. I will put in just one of the high-speed memory sticks at a time and see if just one of them is bad or if they are both bad. Either way, I should be able to get that box back to crunching by the end of the week. 8)

Sounds good, sometimes the memory is just incompatible. If neither works, then that may be the problem. Some motherboards are picky about what memory you put in them.

Have you tried re-installing BOINC, but make sure the "Make BOINC my default screen saver" box is not checked? It comes up when the installation is finishing. It normally is checked so if you click 'Next' or 'Finish' (I don't remember which), you will have this problem.

I appreciate this azazul, (though it's off topic .) At some point I'll boot it with a utility CD and see what's readable. Remove the 2nd & 3rd drives and put back in old box. If everything important is there, will smash offending boot drive with back of ax. (Some aspects of computing are still fun...) If there are things I need on the unreadable half of the drive (it's 250 GB, old box doesn't support it) I suppose someday I may reinstall windows, wait for SP2 to download etc, etc, so I can see what's there.

Reinstalling windows is the easy part ; and I have several old drives I could put it on, but what I refuse to do again is all the vast labor of setting up dozens of programs with hundreds of settings, all in the certain knowledge that sooner rather than later the whole thing will come crashing down again. As I say, I'm just too old for this.

I suppose at some point I may try Knoppix on it just to justify some of the money I've wasted. Just run BOINC from the ram disk & have no disk at all to crash.

Again I appreciate greatly the words, and working with you has been the best part of this whole deal; I will treasure it. But it's not the amount of work, it's that I've totally lost my enthusiasm for computing, and would be a hypocrite if I posted in this thread implying otherwise. I suppose could go, "Congratulations on reaching 1 million credits, but you're a fool to be running programs that write to a hard disk...that way lies madness..." Not so good for team morale either. 8)

So I'd really appreciate it if you would take over as founder: it makes such sense: your webpages would be much easier to update with one person having the lists. Plus as lhc and seti founder, you are pre-BA-approved.

And so far, as on every other occasion, there's not been a flood of applicants so far. I know you'd do a terrific job.

Ken

I can do it, but I was going to give others the chance to volunteer, first. Of course it is up to you when you wish to pass it on, afterall you are the only one who can. If you wish to do it now, then I could at least be interim founder.

Thanks Ken. I just hope that I can do as well as you have. I took you off of the questions/comments line of the team page so that you won't be getting any random emails from members, but if you want a mention in the page somewhere, I would be more than happy to add it.

I forgot that I posted in this thread. It seems to be ok once I restarted boinc. I guess it tried to go into screesaver mode and was not going to be detered by any mere computer user. Anyway, thanks for the reply.

It will just say how many WU's and hours you completed, but your stats start over for BOINC Seti. Of course, I like recognition for past work as much as anybody.

Or could i be doing something worng?

Their server status page has an exceptionally large number of WU's wating for validation. If you wish to read about it, they have a technical news section which explains the problem and how they intend to solve it. Anyway, it will be a bit before you get credit, since over 1 million WU's have to be validated. Since you just joined, then your units are at the very end of this queue. Don't worry though, the SETI@Home team will have the problem fixed soon. But if you are not patient enough, there are the other BOINC projects to crunch in the mean time.

Edit:misplaced comma
