I think he means as bright as each other.
Without doing hours of checking, I'll say that Saturn was pretty bright a few months back. It doesn't look as bright now because it's only visible shortly after sunset. Mars is hot now. When at a fashion show try not to compare the models. Each is equally as 'fiery' but at this time only one can be on the runway. Quickly punching through the years in Skyglobe shows Saturn and Mars (EDIT: and us) away from the sun together on 21 August 2016. Should make for one great sight. Mars will be kind of far away. Somebody with more time should answer though.

Your are right jt-3d, I mean as bright as each other, and further more bright then you see them normally.
So there is two points here. First Point, both Mars and Saturn should be more bright than they are now. Second Point, this more brightness should be the case for both of them at the same time. The Question: Which year will this be?

The brightness of both Mars and Saturn will vary in periods, i.e. they will alternately get brighter, dimmer, brighter dimmer, etc., depending, I think, mostly on how close they are to the earth. So whatever you do figure out, the answer will not be "in the year XXXX" but rather "every 52.8 years or something along those lines. I have no idea of the specifics, however.

However in the first part of January (after Mars reaches -2 in November), Mars will dim again to Saturn's brightness, which will be about -0.2, almost as bright as Saturn gets (it gets up to about -0.5 at other times I think). They'll also be only 80 degrees apart--so, visible at the same time. |

Could you explain how you arrived at this conclusion? |

Well you could have just asked us that.
We would have said that it does not matter how bright any of the planets are., and that nostriadarmas is wrong. We see comets all the time- in fact there is one in virgo right now.... |
