Default Fire threatens Whipple Observatory

'Florida' firefighters focus on observatory, canyon popular for birding

Quote:
The fire was approximately 1 1/2 miles east of the observatory, formerly called the Mount Hopkins Observatory. Its seven instruments are keynoted by the $75 million, 6.5-meter Multiple-Mirror Telescope, the largest single-mirror scope in North America currently, said Daniel Brocious, a spokesman for the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, which operates the telescope jointly with the University of Arizona.

The rest of the observatory is under the auspices of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Among those instruments is a 10-meter optical reflector used to study gamma ray bursts in the atmosphere.

Okay for now

Quote:
Fire officials reported good progress Monday in efforts to subdue the 22,000-acre "Florida" fire, 11 miles east of Green Valley.

The fire, which was 50 percent contained, remained a half-mile from 30 homes and cabins in Madera Canyon and a mile from a major astronomical observatory on nearby Mount Hopkins. Both areas were evacuated last week.

I lived nearly a year in Green Valley a couple years ago and never realized that the Whipple was so close up Madeira canyon. Kicking myself for not visiting. The Monsoon should start in a day or two and we might have to worry about more lightning-caused fire. The rain would help; but.

The skies from there are awsome.
