What's the night sky gonna look like just a few days before Christmas 2012?

Whats special about the year 2012? Anyway, to answer your question, go out a few night before Christmas this year and look at the night sky. The night sky of 2012 (for that same time) will be almost exactly the same-so similar you probably won't notice the difference...unless it's cloudy .

Nothing sci-fi. But yes, end of the world.
You see, around this time the Maya calendar ends. I'm just looking for some clarification, because people say this is the end of the world, and I'm just wondering, why did the Mayans have to end their calendar in 2012? Specifically, some time in the afternoon of December 21, 22 or 23...

The Mayan calander offically ends on December 21, 2012- the day of the winter solstace for that year. I found a neat, yet long site that talks about the end of the Mayan's calander. I havn't read the whole thing yet, but so far it's pretty informative.

The Calander cycle for Mayan was like 3.1 x 10^6 years... 2012 is too early.

I heard of "Planet X" will come close to the sun and cause a huge corona mass ejection which will wipe out the Earth's atmosherpe.

Actually, there was another post on UT that came very close to what galaxygirl's site said: that the solar system would cross the galacic/ eclliptic plane, but the post claims the solar sytem would veer right towards the galactic center. While this is scary, the author of the site galaxygirl pointed me to suggested 2012 was just the start of the golden age, and such astronomical precision against the dark band was just an interesting way to begin it. Hmm...

If thats the case, then ignore what I said...the sky will look very different! But I would much rather see a 'golden age of astronomy' like galaxygirl is talking about.

I just hope doomsayers don't start putting the "dark" part of Dark Disk (or whatever it's called) into perspective too much...too much subsequent riots as a ressult...

If I remember rightly, the Mayan calendar is based around the planet Venus. It's quite a complicated cycle, but basically they believe that the current world age will come to an end on that date. I know the Pleiades are involved too... I have a feeling it's supposed to happen as the Pleiades are setting and Venus is rising.

It's been a long while since I read up on it though so I might be wrong, but I do know for sure it's connected with Venus.

But, will the earth at least go on as December 21 comes and is gone?

The end of the world for the Mayans came a long time before 2012. Not due to some catastrophe, but because they had no fertiliser, and the land where they grew crops ran out of nutrients.

Very strange indeed, but it was known by the ancients that Earth and Venus return to the exact same position every 8 years. In fact, the Olympics are based on that cycle (or half-cycle in that case).

Cheers.

More precisely, China might invade Taiwan on 2012...
